The ISA Internationales Stadtbauatelier was founded in Stuttgart in the late 1970s as a “Stadtbauatelier”. The occasion was requests for advice from cities such as Leonberg, Ulm and Reutlingen to the founder Michael Trieb, as a member of the Urban Development Institute of the University of Stuttgart. ISA was conceived as an applied research and planning office for urban planning , urban architecture and urban design. The clients are both municipal and state authorities. Originally a spin-off from the Urban Development Institute of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart, ISA is personally linked to universities in Germany, Korea, China and Chile. For example with the KIT Karlsruhe in Germany, the Seoul National University in Korea, the Ain Shams University in Cairo and the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile. ISA combines applied research with the latest research-based practice.
Various personalities from the professional world have contributed to the development of the ISA Internationales Stadtbauatelier through objective support and active support. In particular Prof. Antero Markelin (Stuttgart / Helsinki), City Planning Director Richard Roehrbein (Berlin) and Prof. hc Bertrand Warnier (Paris / Cergy-Pontoise).

Projects

The office has been involved in the planning and design of buildings in public spaces since its inception, for example in Leonberg , Ulm and Lübeck . Building plans, framework and urban development plans for cities such as Esslingen am Neckar , Flensburg and Rendsburg were drawn up. Design concepts for villages and entire cities such as Friedrichstadt or Ludwigsburg served as the basis for design recommendations and statutes. They were realized for the cities of Lübeck, Stralsund , Ulm, Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart, among others .

Since the 1990s and the reunification of Germany, the office has been consulted by various state governments, municipalities and semi-state urban development institutions on issues relating to urban development in the so-called new federal states. New areas of responsibility emerged in connection with the redesign of prefabricated housing estates in Jena or Gera .

At that time, the ISA expanded its advisory activities to South America. Urban planning for the city of Santiago de Chile was developed in collaboration with the Universidad de Chile.

After the turn of the millennium, ISA focused increasingly on the planning of public spaces and industrial sites in new cities and districts for up to 500,000 inhabitants in Asia, especially in China and Korea, as well as the planning of industrial areas in Shanghai and Seoul . In France, the office was involved in the urban planning of Cergy-Pontoise . There were also urban planning projects for a Central Business District (CBD) and residential areas in Seoul and Busan , as well as for some new cities in the Seoul metropolitan area. At the same time, planning tasks followed in China in the areas of architecture, public spaces, urban renewal, large housing estates, planning of new towns , special urban development plans and regional planning. For example, plans were carried out for the cities of Beijing , Shanghai , Fuzhou , Quanzhou , Xiamen , Guangzhou ( Canton ), Chongqing , Kunming , Lijiang and Xi'an . Since 2010 planning and consulting activities have been added in the Middle East, for example in Iraq , Mecca , Medina , Morocco and Casablanca .
