I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You is the eleventh studio album by the American soul singer Aretha Franklin and was released on March 10, 1967. It was her first album on Atlantic Records and marked the artistic and commercial breakthrough for Franklin.

background

Aretha Franklin had recorded several albums for Columbia Records since 1960 , but they had little success, although Franklin was considered a highly talented singer since childhood. When her contract with the label expired in 1966, the renowned music producer Jerry Wexler signed her for Atlantic Records . The industry size had previously helped numerous African-American musicians such as Ray Charles or Solomon Burke to achieve success. Wexler was planning the next album in the of Rick Hall operated FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in the southern state of Alabama , "the heart, the rhythm and blues " record. On January 24, 1967, the songs I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man were recorded at FAME Studios. The pianist Aretha Franklin was accompanied by Hall's studio band. After a solid argument between Franklin's husband Ted White and Rick Hall, the recording session was canceled. Wexler also announced their collaboration with Hall, and Franklin and White returned to their hometown of New York City . After a two week break, Franklin and Wexler went back to work. The rest of the album was recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York: Save Me on February 10, 1967, the tracks Respect , Drown In My Own Tears , Don't Let Me Lose This Dream , Baby, Baby, Baby and A Change Is Gonna Come on February 14th and the remaining three songs on February 15th, 1967. Although Wexler no longer wanted to work with Hall, he managed to hire studio musicians for the sessions in New York on the pretext of Hall. Furthermore, the tenor saxophonist King Curtis was honored on the album.

The first single I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) debuted at number 9 on the Billboard single chart and became a million seller within a few weeks . Respect even reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The cover version of the Otis Redding song from 1965 became not only a worldwide hit, but also an anthem of the women's and civil rights movement, as it appeared shortly before the race riots in Detroit in 1967 .

The photo on the cover is from Jerry Schatzberg . Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd acted as sound engineers for the recordings .

Franklin continued working with Jerry Wexler until 1975.

- Peter Shapiro

“The foundation for their success was laid 50 years earlier when the album was released in 1967 that not only changed Aretha's life, but the entire history of pop music: I Never Loved a Man the Way, I Love You - the album that somehow went with it helped Barack Obama become president and women can do whatever they do today. Because this album is more than music. This album is an achievement of our culture, made by a single woman. "
