The history of Ideal Standard is closely tied to the history of American Standard Companies . With the expansion of American Standard through takeovers and mergers, these were followed accordingly by the regional subsidiaries. As an independent company, Ideal Standard has been present on the market since the end of 2007.

In 2006 around 13,000 people were employed by Ideal Standard at 29 locations in Europe. In July 2007, American Standard and Bain Capital announced that Bain Capital would acquire American Standard's bathroom and kitchen products division for $ 1.745 billion. The takeover was completed by December 2007. On November 5, 2007, the new company name, Ideal Standard International, was announced by Bain Capital. Three weeks later, the presentation of the new corporate identity, a brand design and the goal of leading the bathroom into the digital age took place.

Torsten Türling has been CEO since September 2015. In early 2011, Ideal Standard International announced that three plants, two in France and one in the UK, would be closing. Associated with the closure of the business premises is the loss of 560 jobs. The reason for this is the sharp decline in the construction industry of almost 19% due to the financial crisis that has persisted since 2007 .

According to media reports from January 2020, the Saarland ceramics manufacturer Villeroy & Boch is considering taking over Ideal Standard.

Germany

The Ideal Standard Germany GmbH is the German subsidiary of Ideal Standard International. It was founded on April 30, 1901 under the name Nationale Radiator Gesellschaft mbH in Berlin as a subsidiary of the American Radiator Corporation New York . The production of cast iron radiators and boilers for residential construction began in 1902 in Schönebeck on the Elbe . As early as 1903, the administration moved from Schönebeck to Berlin, where the company has since operated under the abbreviation NARAG .

A second production facility was built in 1904 in Neuss, Rhineland . The entry into the German plumbing business was a result of the merger of the parent company American Radiator Corporation New York with Standard Sanitary Corporation to form American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Corporation in 1929. The German subsidiary of Standard Sanitary Corporation was incorporated into NARAG . The new company now also produced and sold enamelled bathtubs, brass fittings and sanitary ware made of crystal porcelain.

In 1950 the name was changed to Ideal Standard GmbH . Ideal Standard Germany has been headquartered in Bonn since 1956 .

In addition to the head office in Bonn, the fittings factory in Wittlich is part of Ideal Standard Germany. The plant went into operation on June 2, 1964 and today employs around 500 people. Radiators were still manufactured in the factory until 1969 . At the beginning of the takeover of JADO, the new investment was assigned to the Wittlich plant.

United Kingdom and Ireland

On February 2, 1999, Ideal Standard UK announced the acquisition of Armitage Shanks Ltd. known. This strengthened the position in Great Britain. Sales rose to over £ 200 million and the workforce rose to 3,300 in 15 locations, including Ireland , in manufacturing and sales. As part of the restructuring of the company following the merger in February, it was announced in June that four plants will be closed and 580 jobs will be cut.

With the purchase of four subsidiaries of the Ireland-based company Qualceram Shires plc in July 2009, the market position in Great Britain and Ireland was strengthened. The companies acquired are: Shires Ireland Limited, Quay Bathroom Limited, Quality Ceramics (Arklow) Limited and Quality Ceramics (Sales) Limited. These are active on the Irish and British markets with the brands Qualceram , Shires , Selecta and Trent Bathrooms .

Ideal Standard is the company's core brand. The JADO and American Standard (Asia, Pacific and Latin America) brands are present on the international market. history

In 1890 JADO was founded as Jans & Roth as a manufacturer of suitcase fittings and accessories for leather goods in Offenbach . Fifty-nine years later the company renamed Jans & Heinsdorf GmbH and produced furniture fittings . A new brand identity was developed in the 1970s. This development was completed in 1975 with the introduction of the JADO brand. The 1980s are characterized by expansion and the acquisition of Wils & Co coined. In 1992 the sanitary and fittings divisions are merged under JADO and the company is converted into a stock corporation. The year 2000 was marked by Ideal Standard GmbH's majority stake in JADO. Two years later, the Danish manufacturer Børma , a valve manufacturer, is taken over. The conversion from a stock corporation to a GmbH will take place in 2005. The years 2006 and 2007 were marked by the complete takeover of JADO by Ideal Standard.

Porcher

With the acquisition of the French company Porcher in 1992, Ideal Standard strengthened its position in the French market. Porcher is based in Roissy-en-France , which also has a training center that trains around 800 installers annually .

Antitrust investigations

Starting in 2004, the European Commission investigated seventeen European sanitary ware manufacturers for the formation of a cartel and unauthorized price fixing . Ideal Standard International had to pay the highest amount with 326.1 million euros. The investigation was completed in 2010. Corresponding agreements in the course of the spin-off from American Standard to Trane Inc. and WABCO as well as the sale to Bain Capital have given Ideal Standard International appropriate commitments that Trane Inc. and WABCO will assume the relevant fines.
