That night, ten people gathered at a remote motel in the Nevada desert during a storm . Because of the storm and the flooded roads, people are forced to stay in the motel. In this claustrophobic atmosphere , a series of fatal accidents and murders occur that cannot be solved at first. The survivors try to prevent further murders and at the same time to expose the perpetrator, but they do not succeed. As the story progresses, it turns out that their birthday is on the same day, May 10th, and that their names are all those of US states.

The head of the actress Caroline Suzanne is cut off. The newly married Lou Isiana is stabbed to death. Chained inmate Robert Maine dies from a baseball bat rammed in his throat. George York is run over by Larry in a pickup while trying to save his stepson. His wife Alice York , who was hit by Ed on the street, appears to die from serious injuries on one of the motel beds. All victims have keys with the motel room numbers in descending order, starting with the number ten . When Lou's wife Virginia Isiana tries to save herself by car with Timothy , the young son of the York couple, the car explodes. Larry Washington is a petty criminal who appropriated the motel some time ago after hiding the dead owner in a freezer. It turns out that Rhodes is not a law enforcement officer but, like the late Robert Maine, is also an inmate. Larry then tries to overpower him together with Paris Nevada , where Larry is shot by Rhodes . There is also a shootout between Ed Dakota and Rhodes , in which both die. The former prostitute Paris Nevada is the only one who can leave the scene of the crime with the pickup truck at dawn in order to fulfill her dream shortly before her thirtieth birthday: an orange tree plantation in Frostproof, Florida .

Meanwhile, Dr. During the rush session, Malick convince those involved that the foreign personalities in Malcolm Rivers' body were "executed", with the result that he is pardoned. It turns out that none of the people in the motel actually exist; they are apparently just split personalities of a condemned serial killer. The action at the motel represents the struggle in the defendant's mind, in whose mind all his personalities met for the first time and tried to gain sole control. The defense of the delinquent tried to eliminate the multiple identities with the help of a psychiatrist in order to destroy the personality of the murderer in the criminal. With Rhodes now "dead", Malcolm Rivers will be placed in psychiatric care under the care of Dr. Malick transferred and transported by vehicle to his clinic.

In the last scene of the subplot, you see Paris Nevada with a hand cultivator at the foot of an orange tree. There she finds a last key with the number one in the ground . Timothy York appears . Flashbacks reveal that the little boy was responsible for the murders. He kills Paris with the hand cultivator. The person of the murderous little boy, Timothy, has taken control of Malcolm Rivers. This overwhelms Dr. Malick by at Slid to the side partition grille to sitting in the passenger seat psychiatrist from the back seat with his handcuffs strangled .
