Count Emmerich ( Imre ) Széchényi von Sárvár-Felsővidék , in historical sources mostly only Count Széchényi (born February 15, 1825 in Vienna ; † March 11, 1898 in Budapest ), was a large Hungarian landowner, as well as a diplomat and politician of the Danube monarchy .

Life

Origin and family

Emerich ( Imre ) Széchényi came from the Hungarian noble family of Széchenyi . He was a grandson of Ferenc Széchényi (1754–1820), the founder of the Széchényi National Library , and the eldest son of Ludwig ( Lajos ) Maria Aloys Széchényi (1781–1855) and his wife Francisca (1797–1873), née. from Wurmbrand-Stuppach . From 1865 he was born with Maria Alexandra (1843–1914). married by Sztáray-Szirmay .

Career

Széchényi enjoyed a private school education and studied from 1838 to 1843 at the ku law academy in Pressburg (today: Bratislava). With the help of his father's connections, he entered the diplomatic service of the Austrian Empire in 1844 , until 1848 as kk attaché at the Austrian embassy to the Holy See in Rome , then from 1848 to 1860 as legation secretary with the rank of business agent at the Swedish court in Stockholm (1848-1850 ), at the German Bundestag in Frankfurt am Main (1850–1852), at the Belgian court in Brussels (1852–1854) and at the Russian court in St. Petersburg (1854–1860). In Stockholm and St. Petersburg he also served temporarily as head of mission; Széchényi repeatedly met Otto von Bismarck in Frankfurt and St. Petersburg .

Under Foreign Minister Bernhard von Rechberg , Széchényi was appointed kk envoy and authorized minister to the royal in March 1860. appointed Sicilian court in Naples . Széchényi followed King Francis II first to Gaeta , then into exile in Rome; In 1864 he was recalled and put into temporary retirement.

Under Foreign Minister Gyula Andrássy , he was reappointed to the diplomatic service of the dual monarchy, which had been reconstituted by the Compromise in 1867 , and in 1878 was appointed kuk ambassador to the German Empire . He held this post until his retirement on October 10, 1892. He then retired to his estates in Horpács , Hungary . Széchényi was also musically active (inter alia as a composer) and was friends with Franz von Liszt and Franz von Suppè .
