Town square

The inner city is a census district and a district of the city of Wels with 7,947 inhabitants in the area of the cadastral community of Wels. The district roughly corresponds to Wels in its historical boundaries or the Roman city of Ovilava .

Districts and settlements

The city is not divided into settlements or districts like all other parts of the city, but into quarters. In Wels one speaks here of the station district, the old town, the suburb district and the market district (formerly the cemetery district). Historic districts such as Rosenau, Berhardin and Hochpoint are now counted as part of the Lichtenegg and Pernau districts . The inner city borders in the north on Vogelweide and Neustadt , in the east on Pernau , in the south on Thalheim and in the west on Lichtenegg .

history

The history of the city center of Wels goes back to the Stone Age . Under the Romans , Ovilava - as Wels was called back then - became a big city. In the 4th century, the importance of Wels as a trading center was lost due to the migration of peoples . Only in the 8th century was Wels equipped with a fortification again. In the 13th century - already under the reign of the Habsburgs - the face of today's town square was formed. The Lederertor was also mentioned at that time.

Emperor Maximilian I , who stayed in Wels again and again and who died in the castle in 1519, was also important for the expansion of the inner city . Since many of Wels's citizens were Protestant during the Reformation , the town was destroyed by flames in 1626 when Fadinger's troops withdrew here. In 1690 the plague also raged in the city center. At the beginning of the 19th century, Wels was repeatedly occupied by French troops, some of whom fought fierce battles with their opponents over the city of Wels.

The opening of the Gmunden - Budweis horse-drawn railway in 1835 was of great importance for the city center .

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the inner city underwent structural changes. Important facilities such as the slaughterhouse, the savings bank or the city theater were built during this time. There were also plans to run a tram from the main train station to the Traunlände. In 1916 the Charles Bridge was completed as the last important structure of this time.

The years between the two world wars were marked by high unemployment. In 1918 the Spanish flu also raged in Wels.

During the National Socialist era, most of the Jewish population in Wels, who lived mainly in the city center, was expelled. At least 13 Welser Jews perished in the concentration camps of the Nazis killed. During the Second World War , the city center was badly destroyed or badly damaged by Allied bombing raids. The train station and suburbs were particularly hard hit.

After the war, many buildings were rebuilt in the style of the 1950s and 1960s, for example the city theater (then a landmark of the city) lost its appearance. The bread tower also fell victim to the brisk construction activity of that time.

Economy and Infrastructure

The inner city is the center of retail in the Wels region, but like so many inner cities in Central Europe, it is struggling with the structural change of the past decades. Some important traffic generators such as fast food restaurants, fashion stores or grocery stores are increasingly settling in the surrounding districts. Nevertheless, numerous important companies have their headquarters or locations in the city center; this is mainly due to the proximity to the main train station. The Fronius company, for example, has a location here. The Berglandmilch - is one of the brand Schärdinger - here is headquartered.

The Wels trade fair, which is located in the west of the district, is also of enormous importance. It is unique in Austria that there is an exhibition center in the densely built-up city center. The Volksgarten and the Tiergarten as well as the Welios are also located on the site .

The city center is also home to numerous educational institutions. The HTL and the two commercial academies are located in this district. Important grammar schools are also located in this district, and the Wels University of Applied Sciences is also an important educational institution for all of Austria.

With the main train station , the city center is connected to international train traffic, and the local train station (Almtalbahnhof) is also located in the west of the district. There is also a station for the Almtalbahn on the exhibition grounds. The central transfer point for the Wels lines is at Kaiser-Josef-Platz. From here the district is connected to the rest of the city.

Culture and leisure

In the city center there are numerous cultural institutions such as the Medien Kultur Haus , which is housed in the Alte Sparkasse. Also important is the Greif City Theater on Kaiser-Josef-Platz, where, in addition to concerts, readings and theater performances, a few balls take place for the sake of the atmosphere. Another venue is the town hall in the Volksgarten.

An important event is the Welser Volksfest, which takes place twice a year, once in spring for the Blühendes Österreich trade fair and once for the autumn fair. Since the larger autumn fair only takes place every two years, the folk festival is called Oktoberfest in odd years. In addition, the Wels city festival will take place every two years from 2014. At Christmas there is the Wels Christmas World in the city center. It is one of the largest Christmas markets in Upper Austria and extends from Pollheimerpark over the Ringstrasse to the town square.

The large parks such as the Volksgarten, the Burggarten or the zoo are used as local recreation areas. The area around the Traun is also becoming increasingly important. An Agenda21 process has been taking place in downtown Wels since October 2009, with the aim of making the living space more attractive and improving the quality of life by involving residents from as many social groups as possible. Among other things, swimming on the Traun and Mühlbach rivers was made possible, a path of remembrance was created and centrally located parks such as the swimming school park or the gas works park (gas park) were redesigned from a social and ecological perspective.

In terms of sport, the Wels inner city criterion is known nationwide.
