Berglandmilch is Austria's largest milk processing and distribution company. It has the legal form of a registered cooperative society with limited liability (eGen). The company headquarters are in Wels (Upper Austria), the central administration in Aschbach (Lower Austria). Berglandmilch is one of the largest food producers in Austria and, together with the Bavarian subsidiary Rottaler Milchwerk eG, one of the top-selling dairies in Central Europe.

history

Establishment phase and consolidation

The company in its current form was founded in 1994 and in 1995 took over the milk activities and the associated trademarks of the AMF Group . The AMF was founded in 1990 through the merger of six large dairies with 1,800 employees, with the Schärdinger Dairy Association holding 47.68% and Agrosserta 25.07% of the shares. These six companies with then 27 production sites in the federal states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria, Carinthia and Burgenland were: (Production sites that were retained after the failure of the AMF are marked with *)

After the founding of the AMF, the brands of the six founding companies were marketed centrally and numerous restructuring and rationalization measures were carried out. The brands Desserta and Schärdinger were established in the high-priced market segment. In 1993 the rapidly growing AMF Group achieved a turnover of 27.5 billion schillings, but in 1994 the balance sheet showed liabilities of 8 billion schillings. In the same year, the Schärdinger Alpenmilch registered limited liability cooperative was set up with its headquarters in Schärding; at the first general assembly in 1995, the name was changed to Berglandmilch registered limited liability cooperative and the company headquarters moved to Linz. From March 1995 to August 1995, the operations of the following cooperatives / GmbHs were incorporated into Berglandmilch :

  • Schärdinger country dairy (FN 110929 g)
  • Linzer dairy (FN 44016 f)
  • Milchunion Alpenvorland (FN 121070 w)
  • BMU Bäuerliche Milchunion Kärnten (FN 74337 w)
  • Dairy in the Mostviertel (FN 77915 g)
  • Milk processing Desserta Graz (FN 49547 p)
  • Cheese cooperative Loibichl and the surrounding area (FN 93521 g)

In September 1995, the newly founded Berglandmilch took over the milk activities and the associated trademark rights from AMF and started production at the turn of the year 1995/1996. The following years were marked by a tight restructuring and modernization program. Of the originally 27 locations of the dairies participating in the AMF, 20 were closed or merged in the following years, which resulted in the loss of numerous jobs.

Expansion of the company since 1999

In 1999 the Rottaler Milchwerk became part of Berglandmilch. This made Berglandmilch the largest dairy group in Central Europe. In return, the Rottaler Milchwerk cooperative received 4.93% of the Berglandmilch cooperative. In 2001 the head office was relocated to Pasching, and in 2003 also the official company headquarters. In 2005, 1,300 farmers from the Horn dairy cooperative and the Waldviertel dairy cooperative merged with the Mostviertel dairy and thus became part of Berglandmilch.

From 2006 to 2012, Berglandmilch carried out vertical price agreements with retail chains in Austria. In 2013, the company was sentenced to a fine of 1,125,000 euros for this. The Chamber of Labor criticized the cartel fine as much too low, as the damage it caused to consumers was significantly higher.

In 2009 the Upper Austrian Landfrisch dairy was taken over. As a result, the company grew back to over 1,000 employees, achieved sales of around 700 million euros and maintained its position as Austria's largest dairy company. In the course of this takeover , the company headquarters was relocated from Pasching to Wels , the previous company headquarters of Landfrisch.

In 2010 Tirol Milch , at that time the fourth largest dairy in Austria, was incorporated into Berglandmilch. The contribution was approved in February 2011, after a review by the federal competition authority, subject to conditions.

In 2011 the Styrian dairy Stainzer Milch joined Berglandmilch. The merger was approved by the Austrian federal competition authority on September 10, 2011, subject to conditions. The Stainzer Milch, Steirische Molkerei eGen did not participate directly in the Berglandmilch, but joined the milk processing "Desserta" registered cooperative mbH , a founder cooperative of Berglandmilch. From now on, the joint cooperative operates under the name Steirermilch Molkerei eGen .

Raiffeisen

Berglandmilch is a member of the Upper Austria Raiffeisen Association and, through it, of the Austrian Raiffeisen Association . Due to the cooperative law, cooperatives are obliged to be members of an auditing association. Their owners, with the exception of the BMU Bäuerliche Milchunion Kärnten and the Rottaler Milchwerk, are organized as cooperatives according to the Raiffeisen system and are therefore also mandatory members of the Raiffeisen auditing association in their respective federal state. There is no corporate law link to other Raiffeisen cooperatives or the Raiffeisen banking group.
