Intelligence Studies is an interdisciplinary subject that focuses on the intelligence services . It developed from the international relations sub-area of political science . Master in Intelligence and Security Studies (MISS)

The Master in Intelligence and Security Studies (MISS) is a university master's degree in intelligence. It is designed as a consecutive face-to-face course with a duration of two years and the acquisition of 120 ECTS points. MISS is set up as a joint intelligence and security-related university education at the Intelligence Services Department of the Federal University for Public Administration (HS Bund) and at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich (UniBw M). Depending on the specialization, the academic degrees “Master of Arts” (MA) or a “Master of Science” (M.Sc.) in the field of “Intelligence and Security Studies” are awarded jointly by both universities. The study locations are Berlin ( Center for Intelligence Training and Advanced Training , ZNAF), Munich and Brühl . In addition to working for the German intelligence services and in the armed forces' military intelligence, the degree offers good career prospects in the national and international security environment. The course was first offered in 2019. Twenty professors are available to students. There are 70 study places per year.

The course is not generally accessible. Structure and content

The course starts with a six-month preparatory course with three modules: “Introduction to Intelligence and Security Studies”, “ Human Rights and Security from a Normative Perspective” and “ Digitization ”. In the preparatory course, the topic should be introduced and a common knowledge base should be established. It is aimed in particular at students in the Bundeswehr.

This is followed by the one-month module “Theoretical Approaches and Methods in Intelligence and Security Studies”. This is followed by core studies I and II, each lasting four months. Ten modules are to be completed in five thematic pillars: "Intelligence Services in Political Decision-Making Processes" (Intelligence Governance and Intelligence Accountability), "Intelligence Methods" (Intelligence Collection and Intelligence Analysis), " Peace and Security in Global Change Processes" (Global Threats and Challenges as well as dealing with uncertainty), " Communication and leadership in intelligence services" and "Intelligence services in the information age " (Intelligence and Cyber ​​Security).

In the subsequent four-month phase of study concentration, students can choose one of four specializations, each consisting of two modules: Cyber ​​Defense (Cyber ​​Defense I and II), Intelligence Services and Public Security (Protection of the Constitution in a well-armed democracy and political extremism), Counter-terrorism (Advanced Intelligence Collection and Analysis and Terrorism Research) and Regional Security (Regional Security I and II).
