Irena Habalik (born January 13, 1955 in Libiąż , Poland ) is an Austrian writer.

life and work

Irena Habalik grew up near Krakow . Dissatisfied with the communist regime , she left Poland in 1974 and went to Switzerland , but was deported by the immigration police . It was more by chance that she ended up in Vienna, where she was granted the right to stay. After years of laboriously building up her own existence and learning the German language, she studied interpreting and journalism at the University of Vienna and worked for Amnesty International for many years .

Irena Habalik writes poetry, short prose and aphorisms . She published poems in newspapers (including NZZ , Falter ), literary magazines (e.g. literature and criticism , Lichtungen , Bawülon ) and anthologies ( Versnetze, etc.). In 1999 the first book of poems was published, Überall ist ein Land , the central theme of which is life abroad.

The poems often sound humorous, relaxed, ironic. […] The word itself has a special meaning in the poetry of Irena Habalik. She can use it playfully, incorporate it into provocative phrases, incorporate it into special, combinatorial, sometimes ironically twisted connections.

Irena Habalik lives in Vienna.
