Sahabzade Irrfan Ali Khan (occasionally also Irfan Khan ; Urdu : عرفان خان; Hindi : इरफ़ान ख़ान , Irfān Kh ān ; * January 7, 1967 in Tonk , Rajasthan ; † April 29, 2020 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian actor .

Khan, who was active in Indian film productions at the beginning of his career , later became known internationally for roles in films such as Slumdog Millionaire , Life of Pi and Lunchbox . He has received two Filmfare Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work .

Life

Irrfan Khan grew up in a Muslim family. From 1984 to 1987 he trained as an actor at the National School of Drama in Delhi . He then moved to Mumbai , where he initially participated in several television series and theater productions.

The Indian filmmaker Mira Nair offered him a brief appearance in her 1988 film Salaam Bombay! on. He then worked regularly in mostly less successful film productions. The big breakthrough came in 2001 with the lead role in The Warrior , an internationally successful historical film produced in Europe.

Khan played his first leading role in a Bollywood film in 2005 in Rog . In 2004 he won the Filmfare Award for best actor in a villain role as a supporting actor in the film Haasil . For his performance in Metro: Love is never too late (2007) he received the Filmfare Award for best supporting actor. European and American productions in which Khan has participated include Namesake - Two Worlds, One Journey , A Courageous Path , Darjeeling Limited , Slumdog Millionaire , The Amazing Spider-Man , Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger , Jurassic World and Inferno .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

In 2018, Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor . After receiving treatment, he returned to work in 2019. In 2020 he suffered an intestinal infection from complications of which he died in April 2020, four days after his mother, aged 53.

Private life

Irrfan Khan was married to Sutapa Sikdar, another graduate of the National School of Drama . The couple had two sons.
