The Jewish cemetery Müntz is a Jewish cemetery in Müntz , a district of the municipality of Titz in the district of Düren ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is located in the Malefinkbach valley in the Ackerflur Am Bruch .

history

The first Jewish resident in Müntz is recorded around 1765. The synagogue since 1848 for District Jülich belonging Jewish community numbered about 1860 48 persons in 1885 still 26, 1911 15 and 1933 only four members. A synagogue was rebuilt in 1845/46, the interior was destroyed in 1938. The building was demolished in 1956.

The Jewish community in Müntz set up its own cemetery, which was occupied between 1870 and 1927. During the Nazi era , the burial ground was badly damaged; some of the tombstones were used in road construction and as stairs. After the war, the remaining tombstones were placed opposite one another in two rows and fragments were stored in a corner. In the period that followed, they were repeatedly the target of destruction.

In 1986, pupils from the Titz Community High School cleaned the cemetery, they found eight more fragments, and at the end they created a documentation. In 2002 the tombstones were relocated. The community of Titz, Monument Protection and the State Association of Jewish Communities of North Rhine , which is now the owner, decided to secure it.

Jewish cemetery badly damaged by storm

In 2008, caused by a storm , a flash flood from the higher-lying arable land destroyed the cemetery wall. The wall was renewed and partially replaced by a metal fence .

In 2013 it was re-erected by a stonemason ; ten tombstones on the eastern side of the wall and nine fragments on the western side. The fragments are three rectangular plinths (two flat and one high), two round gables with acroteria and four flat tent roofs with battlements.

On November 14, 2013, the Titz community held its commemorative event for the Reichspogromnacht at the Müntz Jewish cemetery and the former synagogue site (Raiffeisenstrasse). A small exhibition was then presented in the Bürgerhalle.
