Mellrichstadt Jewish cemetery

history

The cemetery was inaugurated on November 13, 1869. Before that, the deceased of the Jewish community were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Kleinbardorf . The cemetery was expanded in 1922/1923.

When the cemetery was desecrated during the National Socialist era , many inscriptions were knocked out. During the reconstruction, the tombstones ( mazewot ) were restored in such a way that they do not point to Jerusalem , as the Jewish burial rites provide, but incorrectly to the west.

Location and characterization

The cemetery is located next to the former Mellrichstadt barracks at the end of the Wiesentalgraben. It is 35.90 ares in size and there are still about 140 tombstones left.
