biography

Jean de La Baume is the son of Guillaume de La Baume, Seigneur de L'Abergement, de Marboz , de Montfleur etc. (X 1360 before Carignan ), and his (1357) second wife Constance Aleman († probably 1376) in 1363 second marriage François, Seigneur de Sassenage, married. When his father died, he - the only son - was no more than three years old. In 1377 he himself appeared as Seigneur de l'Abergement, de Montgefond , de Mont-Saint-Sorlin etc.

In 1379 he took part in the siege of the conquest of Ornacieux . In 1382 he was given command of the troops with which Ludwig I of Anjou wanted to enforce his claims in southern Italy, and on September 3, 1383 he was appointed Conte di Sinopoli ( Calabria ) for his services . In the next few years he supported Count Amadeus VII of Savoy in his attempt to establish himself in Valais . From 1390 he accompanied Ludwig II of Anjou as a councilor on his campaigns for the Neapolitan throne. On September 11, 1399, Count Amadeus VIII of Savoy accepted him into his Council of State.

On March 17, 1404, Louis de Valois, duc d'Orléans took him to the Order of the Porcupine (Ordre du Porc-Épic), but this did not prevent him from joining Johann Feart , the new Duke of Burgundy , who gave him appointed his cupbearer and made some time later his councilor and chamberlain. In 1408 he followed him in the battle of Othée against the rebellious inhabitants of Liège , and again in 1410, when the antagonism between Burgundy and Orléans escalated into the civil war of the Armagnacs and Bourguignons . In 1411 he was given command of the town and castle of Meaux .

On June 22, 1413 he participated in the signing of the peace treaty between Amadeus VIII of Savoy and Margrave Thomas III. from Saluzzo . From here he returned to the Duke of Burgundy, who commissioned him in 1414 to work out proposals with the Count of Savoy that they wanted to present to the Council of Constance , which began on November 4, 1414. In 1417 he traveled to Germany to celebrate the wedding of Matilde of Savoy, daughter of Amadeus of Savoy, titular Prince of Achaia and Lord of Piedmont, with Elector Ludwig III. negotiated by the Palatinate , which was closed on November 30, 1417 in Pinerolo .

On May 14, 1420 he was appointed Prévôt de Paris by King Henry V of England , who wanted to insure himself of his services , on December 27, 1420 as councilor and chamberlain, on July 8, 1421 as governor of Paris and finally on January 22, 1422 - at the same time as Antoine de Vergy - as Marshal of France, which was recognized by the Parliament on February 3 . In the same month he was sent by Henry V to the Duke of Savoy, a year later the Duke of Burgundy with so much foot soldiers and archers called him to her as possible Chalon-sur-Saone and Tournus to Mâcon to occupy, he then defended for two months.

On December 26, 1427, the (now) Duke of Savoy made the lordship of Montrevel a county, and in 1434 he accepted him into the Order of Announcements. On January 25, 1435 he wrote his will and died a short time later.

Remarks

  1. Père Anselme writes: “le 22. janvier de la même année” (1421), which is correct in the “old style”, but corresponds to 1422 in the “new style”
  2. so still 1422
