history

Jericho was proclaimed on June 7, 1763 by Benning Wentworth as part of New Hampshire with an area of 6 by 6 miles, corresponding to the usual 23,040 acres (about 93.2 km²) for settlement. The banks of the Winooski River, where several mills were built, were an important settlement area. There were six mill privileges. One of these privileges was never used, this mill was never built, four mills have been destroyed by fire or flood disasters in the past decades. What remained was the mill, which was based on the first mill privilege granted, the "Old Red Mill", also "Chittenden Mill", built in 1856 as a successor. It was declared a National Historic Site in 1972 and is now home to the Jericho Historic Society.
