John C. Brown

John C. Brown (born March 13, 1844 in Jefferson County , Ohio , † November 22, 1900 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American soldier and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Treasurer of State of Ohio from 1886 to 1892 .

Career

John C. Brown was born and raised in Jefferson County during the Depression of 1837 . Nothing is known about his youth. His childhood was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . Later, when the civil war broke out, he left school. He enlisted in Company E in the 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1862 . His military career ended when he was wounded in the Battle of Peachtree Creek and lost a leg on July 19, 1864.

After the end of the war, he went to Steubenville, Ohio to do business. He was elected Treasurer of Jefferson County in 1867 and re-elected in 1869. Then he went back to private business. He was re-elected Treasurer of Jefferson County in 1875 and re-elected in 1877. He was President of Steubenville City Council in 1881 .

The Republican Party nominated him in 1883 for the office of Treasurer of State of Ohio. Brown suffered a defeat in the next election. He was finally elected Treasurer of State of Ohio in 1885 and re-elected in 1887 and 1889. In 1896 he was appointed Treasurer of State Samuel B. Campbell to the Treasury Department.

Brown married Malona Glover of Jefferson County in 1885. The couple had a son and a daughter who both survived him. Brown was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the First Methodist Episcopal Church. He died in 1900 and was then buried in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus.
