John Kennedy Howard (born August 16, 1947 in Springfield , Missouri ) is a retired American cyclist and triathlete . He is a three-time Olympian (1968, 1972 and 1976) and winner of the Ironman Hawaii (1981; Ironman World Championships).

Career

John Howard was in road cycling fourfold US Amateur champion in the road race (1968, 1972, 1973 and 1975) and once in the individual time trial .

1968 Summer Olympics

At the Summer Olympics in 1968 , 1972 and 1976 he started for the United States. He finished 44, 62, and 42 in the road race and with the US team 20, 15, 19 in the 100 km team race .

Winner Ironman Hawaii 1981

In October 1981 he was triathlon world champion in Hawaii on the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

World speed record bicycle 1985

On July 20, 1985, he achieved a speed of 245 km / h (152.284 mph) on his bicycle behind a vehicle with a windbreak structure, setting a new world record.
This record was only exceeded ten years later in 1995 by Fred Rompelberg with 268.831 km / h.

After his playing days, John Howard worked as a coach. For example, he looked after the triathlete Paula Newby-Fraser and the former US speed skater Bonnie Blair .
