Joseph Heinrich Anton Count von Beckers zu Westerstetten (born December 2, 1764 in Mannheim , Electoral Palatinate , † January 15, 1840 in Buda , Hungary ) was a count and Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal who came from the Electoral Palatinate.

origin

The noble family von Beckers zu Westerstetten came from Siegen in Westphalia and belonged to the Catholic denomination. Joseph Heinrich was the son of Heinrich Anton von Beckers zu Westerstetten (1695–1777) and his wife Eleonore geb. Hueber from Wittau. The father, electoral Palatinate state minister and envoy in Vienna and Berlin , was admitted to the hereditary nobility of the Electoral Palatinate in 1729 in Schwetzingen, in 1738 to the imperial knighthood with the predicate noble of and received the title of baron in 1742 . Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria raised his children to imperial counts in 1790 during the time of the imperial vicariate .

Archduchess Maria Theresia accepted Joseph Heinrich von Beckers zu Westerstetten in 1769 as an honorary lieutenant in the regiment of the Savoy Dragoons . In 1776 he entered the engineering academy , where he studied for six years. In 1788 he fought as a cavalry master in the Turkish War and stood out for his bravery on August 26th near Törzburg , where he suffered severe wounds. That is why he took his leave as major in 1791, unable to walk . As a result of the events of the French Revolution and the wars connected with it, Joseph Heinrich von Beckers zu Westerstetten lost many of his Rhenish possessions and lost most of his fortune.

He lived in Pest and recovered sufficiently to return to active duty. In 1800 he joined the Hungarian palatine Archduke Joseph Anton Johann of Austria as a wing adjutant . In 1803 the count acquired the Hungarian indigenous government and in 1805 became lieutenant colonel and adjutant general. In 1806 the Archduke appointed him his chamberlain and in 1808 promoted him to colonel .

1813 Major General became, Joseph Heinrich Graf married Beckers to Westerstetten 1815 Panthenau at Brieg , in Silesia , with Baroness Nathalie Roth Kirch Trach . In 1816 he was promoted to the Archduke's chief steward and privy councilor , and in 1824 he received the rank of lieutenant field marshal .

In 1827 Graf von Beckers zu Westerstetten briefly became a division general in Brno , but soon had to retire due to health problems. As a pensioner he lived in Ofen (Buda), where he suffered a stroke on January 11, 1840 and died on January 15.

His youngest son, Count Oskar von Beckers zu Westerstetten (* 1832), fell as an Austrian captain of the 46th Infantry Regiment on July 3, 1866, in the battle of Königgrätz . His grave cross is preserved on the battlefield at Chlum (Všestary) .

Another son was the Lieutenant Field Marshal Count Emil von Beckers zu Westerstetten (1826-1908).

The daughter Leonharda (Leonie) married the Austrian general Friedrich von Bianchi (1812–1865).
