Marie , Ontario ; † February 3, 2006 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player who made 637 games for the Toronto Maple in the course of his active career between 1941 and 1963, among other things Leafs and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . During his ten seasons in the NHL, Klukay, who was one of the best defensive strikers of his generation, won the Stanley Cup four times with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1947 , 1948 , 1949 and 1951 . He also took part in the NHL All-Star Game three times .

Career

Klukay, who lived in Sault Ste. Marie was born in the province of Ontario , initially played in his native city during his junior years. He was later active between 1942 and 1943 with the Stratford Kroehlers in the Ontario Hockey Association . In the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1943 , the attacker finally made his professional debut when he completed a game for the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League . Klukay's leap into the professional field was abruptly interrupted in the summer of 1943 when he had to do his military service for over two years in the Royal Canadian Navy due to World War II . He played sporadically for the teams of the Navy military bases in Toronto and Cornwallis . In 1945 he ended his career in the Canadian armed forces.

The offensive player returned to professional ice hockey for the 1945/46 season. He came to the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League during the season and was able to convince there with 49 points in 57 games. The Hornets were serving as the Toronto Maple Leafs' farm team at the time . For the game year 1946/47 Klukay returned after a three-year absence in the squad of the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he was henceforth trained by teammate Nick Metz to be a reputable defensive striker. In the following three seasons between 1947 and 1949, the Canadian won the Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs . Another followed at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1951 . In addition, as a member of the reigning champions, he participated in as many NHL All-Star Games as a result of the first three title wins . After a total of six seasons in the Toronto jersey, Klukay's time there came to an end in September 1952 when the team was rejuvenated and he was sold to the Boston Bruins .

With the Bruins, the striker spent a little over two years, during which he reached 20 goals for the first time in his career in the 1953/54 season. In addition, he stood with Boston in the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1953 , where he missed his fifth title win. In November 1954, he finally returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Leo Boivin . There he played another full season in the NHL. In the game year 1955/56 , the now 33-year-old was sent to the Pittsburgh Hornets in the AHL in November 1955 after 18 season appearances. There he ended the season and subsequently did not return to the NHL.

Instead, Klukay went to Windsor. There he ran from autumn 1955 to 1963 for the Windsor Bulldogs . First in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association , then later in the Ontario Hockey Association . The time in Windsor was crowned in the spring of 1963 by winning the Allan Cup under the direction of coach Harry Watson . Then the Bulldogs were accepted into the International Hockey League and increasingly professionalized. In the IHL, the now 40-year-old attacker played a game for Windsor before declaring his active career over. After the end of his career, Klukay remained loyal to ice hockey as a referee and lived in Southfield in the US state of Michigan . He died in February 2006 in Sault Ste. Marie at the age of 83.
