occupation

Julia, You're Magical is a 1962 film by director Alfred Weidenmann based on the novel Theater by William Somerset Maugham . The main role of Julia is cast with Lilli Palmer . Charles Boyer plays her husband, Jean Sorel plays her teenage lover, Charles Regnier plays a family friend and Thomas Fritsch plays Julia's son.

action

Julia Lambert is still a very successful, if not very young, actress at a London theater. Her director and husband Michael is devoted to her, but the relationship has become a little unattractive. Julia considers seducing a family friend, Lord Charles Tamerly, but lets it go. Tom Fennel, the theater's young tax advisor, falls in love with the diva and courted her - and she got involved in an amour fou . Tom is poor and so Julia gives him a hand. But it is precisely this patronizing behavior that cools the feelings of the young man, who, by the way, is only a little older than Julia's son Roger, and he soon hooks up with a young theater actress who uses him to advance her career. Julia is not ready to be performed by a younger woman, neither on stage nor in her love life. So she first ditched her lover in order to save face, and at the premiere of her next play she played the young actress mercilessly against the wall. Extremely satisfied by this success, she goes incognito to a restaurant to indulge in a normally forbidden pleasure, a sumptuous meal to which she acknowledges with the words: “What is love for a beef steak with fried potatoes!” There she is met by her husband discovered and addressed, who not only forgives her for her caprices, but also led her back on the path of virtue, or at least back into the bosom of the family.

criticism

“An aging diva begins a love affair with a young man, until she finally regains her senses. A brilliantly staged entertainment film based on a model by Somerset Maugham. "

- Heyne Film Lexicon, 1996

“Elegant, slightly ironic entertainment theater based on Somerset Maugham; played excellently, with in parts ingenious dialogue. "

“Apt social criticism by the English writer Maugham, just as aptly translated into film. But only for adults who are confident in their judgment. "

Remake

In 2004, another adaptation of the Somerset Maugham novel was made under the direction of István Szabó under the title Being Julia . Szabó cast Annette Bening in the role of Julia .
