action

Mathias Bentrup works as a cutter in the Holthusen colliery in the Ruhr area . He fell in love with Bärbel Hofkirchner, who had traveled to the Ruhr from southern Germany, but she didn't really feel at home in this area. She is not a real miner's wife and is always afraid that something terrible could happen to her friends underground. Mathias doesn't take her fears very seriously and laughs about it. One day Bärbel decided to return to their old homeland. When Mathias finds out about it, he immediately runs after her to stop her. Meanwhile, he cares too much about this woman whom he would like to marry. Due to this action, however, he missed the important test for obtaining the advanced exam and is then excluded from the test.

Several years have passed and Mathias and Bärbel have long been a married couple. Barbel's life is still dominated by fears for her husband, especially when he has to drive a night shift because something has collapsed or rubble has to be removed. She can no longer bear the constant worries and pleads with him to give up his job. To her greatest surprise, Mathias agrees, but there is another reason: he beat his comrade Otto Beck in a dispute, and the unwritten laws of the buddies state that in this case the attacker has to leave the mine.

Mathias decides to change his job and takes over a rather neglected pub in the area. With the help of a few friends, he spruced up the shop and turned it into a cozy meeting place, which soon became known under the name "The tavern for eternal love". Although the shop is booming, Mathias remains dissatisfied. He wasn't born to run a pub or tavern, his love is underground work. One day when a water vein is hit while mining, two miners are trapped underground. Mathias immediately offers to help with the rescue attempts. As a seasoned miner, he knows what to do and can eventually save the pals. He has thus rehabilitated himself and is taken back by his colleagues in the circle of miners. Bärbel realizes that only this life makes her husband happy and inevitably accepts his wish to go back into the pit.

Production notes

The shooting of Die Schenke zur Eternal Love took place from autumn 1944 to spring 1945. The exterior shots were taken in Dittersbach near Waldenburg , in the Lower Silesian coal field. These outdoor shoots had to be abruptly stopped when the Red Army advanced to the gates of Waldenburg. Leading actress Monika Burg (Claude Farell) later recalled: “During the shooting on February 16, 1945 the sound engineer suddenly rushed out of his cabin and shouted in horror, 'Get ready to receive the Russians, they are coming, they are already there!' . There is no panic, but a high tension that turns into high spirits when we are instructed to assemble all of us at the station. (...) The small train station in Waldenburg is black with people waiting for the promised train. The rush (on the train compartments) is gigantic. (...) Carl Raddatz railed loudly against everything and everyone. (…) Dresden is reached in the afternoon of February 20, 1945. Dresden is destroyed by the bombing raids. It goes on to Berlin. Arrival 02/22/1945. Wolfgang Liebeneiner shoots in Babelsberg Life goes on . The recordings have to take place at night, there is no electricity during the day. In a few days, the recordings of Die Schenke der Ewigen Liebe will have to be continued. ”At the end of the war, the film was being edited.
