Julian Koch (born November 11, 1990 in Schwerte ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach. He was mainly used as a right full-back , but can also play as a center- back or in defensive midfield .

Player career

youth

Koch was born in Schwerte and after a few months moved with his parents to Dortmund . Here he played in the Hörde district for VfL . In 2001 he took part in the “Day of Talents” organized by the youth department of Borussia Dortmund and was then taken over into this club. There he went through the junior teams and finally had his first assignment in the senior area for Dortmund's second team in the Regionalliga West in the 2008/09 season . He played firmly in this team, although at that time he should still have played for the A-youth .

Borussia Dortmund

After the rise of the BVB reserve in the 3rd division , he made his professional debut on July 25, 2009 in the 3: 4 opening defeat of his team at Wacker Burghausen , after he had partially completed the preparation with the first team. He then commuted between appearances in the third division team and the substitute bench for the first team until he played in the Bundesliga for the first time on March 6, 2010 . In the 3-0 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach , he replaced Kevin Großkreutz in the 85th minute . On the next match day he was substituted on again, but then continued to play in the 3rd division, in which he played 24 times, but with his club as table-18. descent.

Loan to MSV Duisburg

After the end of the season, he extended his contract by one year until the summer of 2012 with the aim of being loaned to the 2nd Bundesliga so that he could gain match practice at a higher level. He was transferred to MSV Duisburg on loan for the 2010/11 season . There he was first elected by his new teammates to the players' council and one day later appointed by coach Milan Šašić as deputy to captain Srđan Baljak . In his first league game for MSV in the 3-1 away win at VfL Osnabrück , he initially caused a penalty that led to an interim 1: 1 equalization, but later scored his first goal for his new club and renewed leadership with a header.

During the winter break he was classified by kicker in its semi-annual ranking list as the best player in the league in the “midfield defensive” category. The editors emphasized that he would have held the top position in the “wing defensive” category, as he played the first half of the series as a right-back. In the second half of the season he remained part of the regular formation and was involved in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup 2010/11 .

On the 24th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga in the away game at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , he was seriously injured in the initial phase and torn an anterior ligament and tore the anterior cruciate ligament , which ended the season prematurely for him. Due to a compartment syndrome , Koch was temporarily threatened with amputation of his right lower leg. Without him, Duisburg reached 8th place in the table and the DFB Cup final , which was lost to FC Schalke 04 0-5.

Return to Dortmund

After his return to Borussia Dortmund, he was out of the 2011/12 season due to his injury. At the end of the 2011/12 season, he became German champions for the first time in his career with BVB without having played a game. On May 2, 2012, his contract with BVB was extended until June 30, 2014, as the club management and the coach were convinced that Koch would return to his old good performances after his injury.

Second loan to Duisburg

Koch was awarded again by BVB to MSV Duisburg for the 2012/13 season . As with his first loan period, he received number two. Shortly before the start of the season, he was operated on for a tear in the meniscus . On October 27, 2012, after 609 days without a game, he made his comeback in the second team in the Regionalliga West in the home game against Sportfreunde Siegen (0: 3). A week later he was also used in the first team.

1. FSV Mainz 05

In the summer break of 2013, 1. FSV Mainz 05 signed Koch. His contract ran until 2017. In addition, BVB secured a buyback option.

Loan to FC St. Pauli

In January 2015, Koch was awarded to the second division FC St. Pauli until the end of the season .

Fortuna Dusseldorf

For the 2015/16 season Koch was signed by Fortuna Düsseldorf. He received a contract that ran until 2018.

Ferencváros Budapest

In January 2017 Koch left Fortuna and joined the Hungarian first division side Ferencváros Budapest . With the Hungarians he was only cup winner in the 2017/18 season and champion one season later. Due to injury, Koch only played one role in the championship season at Ferencváros.

National team

After strong performances in the second division, Koch was nominated by Rainer Adrion for the U-21 national team's friendly against Ukraine on October 11, 2010 . In the 2-1 win, he was on the starting line-up and completed his first of two U-21 internationals.
