action
Count Thibault von Malfete, who lived in the Middle Ages, is supposed to marry Princess Rosalind. A competitor of Thibault wants to marry this himself. He wants the princess to drink a magic potion and then kill Thibault, but Thibault accidentally drinks it and kills the princess.
A magician prepares a magic drink for von Malfete, which is supposed to transport him into the past, so that von Malfete prevents the death of his fiancée. Instead, von Malfete and his squire André le Pâté are transferred to modern Chicago . There you get to know Julia Malfete, a descendant of Thibault. Thibault and André live with the woman who is engaged to Hunter Cassidy. André falls in love with Angelique, Julia's neighbor.
The magician appears with a new magic drink. André doesn't want to go back to the past. Thibault, Julia and the magician drive into a museum , the police , notified by Hunter, pursue them. Time travelers take a drink in the museum and return to the Middle Ages.
Thibault prevents Rosalind's death and marries her. His competitor falls out of the window of the castle and dies.
Reviews
Michael Atkinson wrote in the Village Voice on April 9, 2001 that the comedy was "warmed up". Even as the original, it looked neither sharp nor modern and this is the case again with the remake.
James Berardinelli quoted the saying on ReelViews that a guest would stink like a fish after three days. This sensation comes earlier when watching the film. The film is one of a large number of forgetful comedies that only offer a few funny moments. The portrayal of Jean Reno was compared with a portrayal of a person with reduced mental abilities ("acting like an idiot"). Only the special effects are better than in the 1993 film.
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on April 6, 2001 that the film was one of the few US remakes of French films that not only preserves the essence of the original, but even improves it. The gags based on the contrasts are funnier than in the first film.
Stephen Hunter wrote in the Washington Post on April 6, 2001 that the comedy was not funny. He criticized the portrayals of Christina Applegate, Matt Ross and Christian Clavier; only the portrayal of Jean Reno was praised.
"The most popular number revue with level gags that lacks any logic and social criticism."
backgrounds
The production cost of the film were estimated at 35 million US dollars . It grossed $ 4.8 million in United States theaters.
