Vingst is an eastern part of Cologne in the Kalk district on the right bank of the Rhine .

geography

The district is located on a now dry channel in the formerly swampy area of the lower terrace of the Rhine west of a glacial arm of the Rhine. The soil of the formerly predominantly forested area is heavily loess and clay, the average height of the largely flat local area is 51 meters above  sea level . The geographically highest point is about 57 meters on the Im Heidkamp street , the lowest is 45 meters in the allotment garden on Vingster Ring .

Vingst borders in the east and in the southeast with the Vingster Ring on the Ostheim district , in the southwest with the embankment of the Sieg line on the district of Humboldt / Gremberg and in the west with the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line on Kalk . The district boundary in the north to Höhenberg runs without any visible structural separation.

history

Vingst was first mentioned as Vinhem in a deed of donation from Archbishop Heribert of Cologne to Deutz Abbey in 1003. However, there are indications that the place was already settled in Roman times, because the name Vinhem is probably derived from the Latin word vinitor (winemaker), and a Roman main road led from Porz via Vingst to the north.

For a long time Vingst was a rural suburb, the center of which was today's Heßhofplatz. There was the Judenhof (better known as Heßhof), the Unkelshof, the Gremberger Hof and the Vingster Hof, which was built before 1180 and still exists today, all of which belonged to the Deutz Abbey but were leased at times.

From 1900 to 1910 Vingst ran its own mayor's office within the city of Kalk with Gremberg, which belongs to the municipality . The first and only mayor was Aloys Kuth . The mayor's house is still in Heßhofstrasse today and is used as a youth facility. Several residential buildings were built around the town center during the founding period. Because of the proximity to the industrial city of Kalk, many workers in the factories there lived in Vingst, as there was a direct rail connection to the neighboring town.

Due to the great destruction of the Allies in the Second World War in the industrial sites of the neighboring districts of Kalk and Mülheim , new living space was urgently needed after the end of the war. Since Vingst had large areas of agricultural land that were converted into building land, a large number of transitional residential houses in a simple construction method could be built in the area of Würzburger Strasse in 1947 and 1948 . These houses were only supposed to exist for a few years until new houses were built, but were later used as accommodation by guest workers and socially disadvantaged families. Until 1957, the eastern and southern parts of the village continued to be used as agricultural land by the farmers Honecker and Hundgeburth. Since the municipal housing association GAG had planned two further settlement projects , the farmers were compensated.

The first was the Sweden settlement in the area of Nobelstrasse. In the vernacular, this settlement is also known as the parrot settlement because of its brightly colored painting . The Vingst settlement between Waldstrasse and Kuthstrasse was built only slightly later . All housing estates were social housing projects; Most of the apartments were only rented with housing entitlement certificates from the City of Cologne. Thus, within a few years, Vingst developed from a rural to a working class suburb. Later, during the general recession, some parts became socially disadvantaged.

In the 1960s, the Marbergweg / Auf dem Kitzeberg settlement was built in the southeast, and is characterized by terraced and semi-detached houses. The Paul-Gerhardt-Haus evangelical community center was built here in 1965 according to plans by the architects Schulze and Hesse. In 2013 the building was profaned and in 2015-2017 it was converted into an apartment building.

Initially it was the suburban railway line A to Rath / Heumar and Königsforst , since 1958 the city railway with lines 8 and 9. Today, line 9 connects the district to the east with Ostheim, Heumar and Königsforst via the Vingst underground station ; to the west is reached via Kalk, Deutz and the Neumarkt Sülz .

District redevelopment

At the end of the 1980s, a major renovation project began in Vingst. First, the transition houses on Würzburger Straße were completely renovated and given new facades. A house was externally restored to its original state and was preserved as a monument. This was followed by the Vingst II settlement , whereby it was found that the building fabric of the houses to be renovated was sometimes very poor, so that it turned out to be cheaper to demolish a large part of the apartment blocks and replace them with new buildings. During the renovation phase, the tenants of the Vingst II estate had to move into replacement apartments in the Vingst I. In order to be able to provide enough replacement accommodation, the GAG had not brokered any vacancies to new tenants since 1995. After the completion of the Vingst II settlement , the final renovation project for the Vingst I settlement proved difficult for the developer, as the entire residential area was protected as a group building monument from the 1960s . After a long dispute between the preservationists and the GAG , the renovation could only start after a compromise in 2002. The monument protection of the residential buildings was lifted, so the houses in Nobelstrasse and Kirkegaardstrasse could be demolished and replaced by new houses in a similar architectural style. The other part of the settlement was redeveloped, whereby the GAG undertook to preserve the appearance of the apartment blocks. The only optically permissible change was new attached balconies. The renovation project was completed in 2012 with the construction of the new central building in Vingstveedel on Ostheimer Straße.

In connection with the modernization, various citizens' initiatives have been formed to beautify the district. Among other things, the Blühendes HöVi campaign has existed since 2003 , of which more than 45,000 daffodils were planted in the green areas of Höhenberg and Vingst in 2007 alone.

church

Catholic Parish Church of St Theodor
Ev. Church of the Redeemer

With the parish church of St. Theodor , the Catholic parish of Vingst has one of the most modern places of worship in the city of Cologne. In an earthquake on April 13, 1992, the old church was so badly damaged that it had to be demolished except for the tower, which rests on its own foundations. The new church was built according to plans by the architect Paul Böhm and was consecrated on March 16, 2002.

Since the church was damaged, the parish of St. Theodor has formed a community congregation with St. Elisabeth in Höhenberg , which is led by Pastor Franz Meurer .

Due to the poor social situation in the villages of Vingst and Höhenberg, Pastor Meurer introduced an exemplary social network that, among other things, supports a clothing store and a grocery store for the socially disadvantaged as well as the HöVi-Land summer vacation time, which is largely financed by donations .

A significant dialogue that describes Meurer as a person is as follows:
At a symposium, the head of the Cologne Health Department stated: “ What use is it that a pastor distributes meatballs. We have to solve the problems structurally. ” Meurer replied succinctly: “ That is good and right, but such structural solutions have not been available for decades. And that's how long I prefer to fry meatballs for everyone. "

At the suggestion of the community, in March 2007, despite resistance from the Archdiocese of Cologne, he donated the collection of a DİTİB Sunday mass to help equip the new Cologne Central Mosque in Ehrenfeld .

In the neighborhood you will find the large senior citizens' home at An St. Theodor . The sponsor has no economic connection to the parish.

The Protestant Church of the Redeemer of the Vingst-Neubrück-Höhenberg community was built in 1957 and offers space for 300 people. During the construction phase of St. Theodor, the Catholic community enjoyed the right of hospitality, so that Catholic services were also held in the Church of the Redeemer. A kindergarten and the “Blockhaus”, a youth facility, are attached to the church.

Leisure time / clubs

Vingst is surrounded by extensive green areas in the south and east. These are part of the green space created in the former Cologne fortress ring , which surrounds the whole of Cologne. In the south the Gremberger wood joins, in the east the green area around Fort X and the intermediate plant Xa , in the north the Merheimer Heide .

There are also public green spaces on Josef-Boschbach-Weg, in the area of Oranienstrasse and Matthias-Kann-Weg.

At the Vingster Ring, but already in the Ostheimer area, there is a natural open-air swimming pool , also known as Vingster Baggerloch . The water was created between 1928 and 1959 when gravel, sand and crushed stone were mined here. Due to the lively interest of local children in swimming here, which was still illegal at the time, the city of Cologne decided to turn the excavator hole into a safe bathing lake. Shallow water zones were created for non-swimmers and small sandy beaches were designed. It has been open to the public since 1960. The lake is about 2.21 hectares and has a circumference of about 660 m.

The traditional allotment gardeners association Köln-Vingst e. V. from 1923 now looks after 280 gardens with 100,000 m² of garden land.

At the end of Lustheider Straße, actually already in the Höhenberg district, is the club area of SSV Vingst 05 , which has a tennis department in addition to the traditional football department. The 1st team has been playing in the district league B since 2013.

The traditional Vingster fair takes place on the second weekend in October. On Carnival Sunday, the carnival procession organized by Vingster KG Fidele Vingster parades through the streets of Vingster.

The HöVi-Land has been taking place every summer north of the Vingster open-air pool since 1994, a holiday tent town for children, organized by the Catholic and Protestant parishes of Höhenberg and Vingst. The HöVi-Land-Weg is named after her.
