Canton of Sobernheim

The canton of Sobernheim (French: Canton de Sobernheim ) was one of ten administrative units into which the Simmern arrondissement in the Rhine-Moselle department was divided. The Canton was in the years 1798 to 1814 part of the First French Republic (1798-1804) and the First French Empire (1804-1814).

The canton was also a district court of justice . The canton president was Charles Neumann in 1808, and Philipp Manz was the justice of the peace.

Before the annexation of the Left Bank of the Rhine in the First Coalition War , the administrative district of the canton of Sobernheim belonged mainly to the County of Sponheim (offices of Böckelheim and Winterburg), some villages were knightly property.

In 1814, the Rhine-Moselle department and thus also the canton of Sobernheim temporarily became part of the Generalgouvernement Mittelrhein , then came under joint Austrian - Bavarian administration and in 1815 came permanently to the Kingdom of Prussia due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna . The canton of Sobernheim was divided into 23 municipalities with 46 localities, which were administered by three Mairies . The communities of Brauweiler , Schwarzerden , Seesbach , Simmern unter Dhaun and Weitersborn belonged to the Sobernheimer Mairie Monzingen, but were otherwise assigned to the canton of Kirn . In 1808 the canton had a total of 7952 inhabitants. There was a teacher in almost every church.
