Canton of Simmern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canton of Simmern (French: Canton de Simmern ) was one of ten administrative units into which the Simmern arrondissement in the Rhine-Moselle department was divided. The Canton was in the years 1798 to 1814 part of the First French Republic (1798-1804) and the First French Empire (1804-1814).

The canton was also a district court of justice . The canton president was Nikola Deuster in 1808, and Joseph Anton Steinberger was the judge of the peace. Both were civil servants in Simmern during the time of the Electoral Palatinate.

Before the annexation of the Left Bank of the Rhine in the First Coalition War , the administrative district of the canton of Simmern belonged almost entirely to the Upper Palatinate Office of Simmern .

In 1814, the Rhine-Moselle department and with it the canton of Simmern initially became part of the Generalgouvernements Mittelrhein , then was under joint Austrian - Bavarian administration and in 1815 became part of the Kingdom of Prussia on the basis of the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna . Under the Prussian administration, the canton of Simmern was incorporated into the newly formed district of Simmern in the Koblenz administrative district . The entire area is now part of the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate .
