Karl Botho Wend Heinrich Graf zu Eulenburg (* 2. July 1843 in Wicken , † 26. April 1919 ) was a Prussian general of cavalry in the First World War .

Karl Botho came from the noble family Eulenburg and was the son of Botho Heinrich zu Eulenburg (1804–1879) and his wife Therese, née Countess Dönhoff (1806–1885). He had several siblings. Among them were August , Botho and Wendt .

Military career

Eulenburg attended high school in Marienwerder from 1856 and then became a cadet in Berlin on May 4, 1859 . Coming from the cadet corps, Eulenburg was transferred to the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment No. 3 of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant on May 6, 1862 . In the following year, on October 25, 1863, he was appointed regimental adjutant. As such, he took part in the battle near Trautenau , the battle of Königgrätz and the enclosure of Olomouc in 1866 during the war against Austria . In October 1869 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and was transferred to the 2nd Guards Cavalry Brigade as an adjutant . In the mobilization of 1870 at the beginning of the war against France , Eulenburg was initially unable to take part due to a leg injury. Only at the end of August did he come to his brigade in France and was slightly wounded in the battle of Sedan . In the further course of the war he remained in the brigade staff under Albrecht of Prussia , fought at the Hallue , near Bapaume and Saint-Quentin , took part in the siege of Péronne and was deployed with Pierrefitte, Gisors and Vernon. In the meantime, on October 21, 1870, Eulenburg received the Iron Cross 2nd class for his achievements . After the end of the war, he was transferred to the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment on February 23, 1873 , and was only released from his previous command on September 22, 1873. After Eulenburg had become Rittmeister on February 14, 1874 , he was appointed squadron chief on October 15, 1874 . He held this post until June 11, 1880 and then became adjutant of the Guard Cavalry Division . The following year, on October 13, he was transferred to the General Command of the Guard Corps in the same function . Eulenburg remained in this position for almost eight years, in the meantime became a major on June 2, 1883 and was able to take part in exercises of Russian troops as an observer several times .

Eulenburg returned to the troop service on April 16, 1889 and was entrusted with the command of the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment. On June 27, 1889 he was appointed regimental commander and on September 21, 1889 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on November 17, 1891 to colonel . As such, he was commissioned from August 19, 1893 to May 13, 1894 with the leadership of the 1st Cavalry Brigade and then appointed brigade commander. Eulenburg was promoted to major general on April 4, 1896 with a patent dated March 30, 1896 . Commissioned on April 4, 1899 with the leadership of the 1st division , Eulenburg was finally appointed with the promotion to lieutenant general on April 18, 1899 commander of this division . He managed his Wicken estate and, as a member of the Prussian mansion, often took part in the conferences in Berlin. Wilhelm II gave Eulenburg the character of General of the Cavalry on September 10, 1910 . In May 1912 he was also given permission to carry the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment.

During the mobilization at the beginning of the First World War, Eulenburg was made available and appointed deputy commanding general of the I. Army Corps in Königsberg. On December 24, 1914, he received the patent for his rank. With the award of the crown to the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves, Eulenburg's mobilization provision was lifted on July 10, 1916.

Eulenburg had been a legal knight of the Order of St. John since June 24, 1886 and was awarded the Order of the Crown, First Class, on September 19, 1901 for his longstanding services .

Eulenburg had married Luise Johanna Valeska von Bonin (1845–1871) on June 4, 1867 in Krangen . After her early death he married on October 3, 1894 in riotous living with Marie Countess of Eulenburg (* 1871) from the house of debauchery. The first marriage revealed:
