Katherine Jean "Kate" Bolduan ([ ˈbɔːldwɪn ]; Kate Bolduan ? / I ) (born July 28, 1983 in Goshen , Indiana ) is an American television journalist for CNN / CNN International . She is the host of At This Hour With Kate Bolduan on CNN, a podcast writer, and an event host. Audio file / audio sample

Youth and education

Kate Bolduan grew up in Goshen , Indiana, the third of four sisters. Her parents are Jeffrey and Nadine Bolduan (nurse). She went to Goshen Public High School and then to George Washington University . There she completed a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2005 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa . During her time at university, she was a member of the volleyball team and an actress in the theater group. During her studies she spent time in Madrid , where she learned Spanish.

Career

After graduation

After graduation, Bolduan worked as a general journalist for WTVD-TV in Raleigh , North Carolina . She was a production assistant for NBC News and MSNBC in Washington DC. She has also worked for House & Garden Magazine, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News .

CNN

CNN Newsource

Early in her career at CNN, she took on general journalistic roles at CNN Newsource . She reported on the 2008 presidential election in the US, for which she traveled across the US and incidentally reported on other incidents such as the story about the conviction of OJ Simpsons for armed robbery in 2008, a collapse of a bridge in Minneapolis and the end of the NASA space shuttle Program.

The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer

She then moderated the program The Situation Room together with Wolf Blitzer . Bolduan provided related "feature stories", current news (so-called "breaking news") and live reporting.

Bolduan then devoted himself exclusively to reporting from the United States Congress based in Washington, DC

Newday

She then co-hosted CNN's New Day program with Chris Cuomo and Michaela Pereira at CNN's New York headquarters. Bolduan conducted interviews with various personalities, actors and politicians, including the then 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama .

During her first maternity leave, she was permanently replaced with Alisyn Camerota by Jeff Zucker on New Day without her knowledge . Bolduan then switched to At This Hour With Berman and Bolduan (since John Berman has left the show).

At This Hour with Kate Bolduan

Since the beginning of 2017 Kate Bolduan has moderated At This Hour With Kate Bolduan alone. The show runs for one hour on weekdays.

State of America with Kate Bolduan

During the 2016 presidential election in the United States , Bolduan hosted State of the Race with Kate Bolduan with up-to-date coverage of the election campaign. The show was renamed State of America with Kate Bolduan in 2017 and got a new studio. The concept of the show has also been changed to a politics talk show. The last episode of the show aired on September 20, 2019.

Bomb threats 2018

On October 24, 2018, CNN, among others , received a pipe bomb in the mail. The Time Warner Center was then evacuated. Bolduan was one of the evacuees. She reported live from 58th Street in New York within sight of the action until the bomb was transported by the NYPD to a location in the Bronx suitable for further investigation . She and her team communicated live via a Skype connection on a mobile phone .

Kate Bolduan's Roots

In 2014, Bolduan made a feature called Kate Bolduan's Roots . Kate Bolduan's great-great-grandparents came from Belgium . Bolduan traced her roots in a feature shortly before the birth of her first daughter. She traveled to Liege in Belgium to research her family tree with a genealogist. Her great-great-grandmother came to America in 1912 with her two-year-old daughter and six months pregnant on board the SS Lapland . The SS Lapland took in survivors of the Titanic disaster . Her great-great-grandfather came to the USA on board the SS Kronland . Bolduan's family came from a long line of glassmakers from the small town of Chênée at the mouth of the Vesdre into the Ourthe .

Champions for Change series

Champions for Change is an annual series on CNN in which presenters and other CNN employees choose a topic and then go outside and do a report on site. This recurring event is inspired by the Champions for Change initiative of the then White House under President Barack Obama .

The story behind Farm Aid

Bolduan grew up on an apple plantation. In 2017, she took off as part of Champions for Change and visited farms in Virginia . She called her report The story behind Farm Aid in reference to Farm Aid . She held talks with a smallholder and with the operators of an organic farm about her point of view and the situation in America.

Every mother counts

In 2018, Bolduan selected the Every Mother Counts Organization as the topic for Champions for Change . Every Mother Counts is an international organization that offers pregnant women and young mothers help and support in various areas of life.

Offering shelter from a violent world

For the 2019 feature , she visited the Chicago-based non-profit organization KOB (Kids Off the Block). The organization is led by Diane Latiker, with whom Bolduan conducted an interview ten years ago. At the time of the report, KOB has existed for 15 years and tries to keep children and young people (primarily African-Americans) away from juvenile and street crime. In addition, Ms. Latiker offers a form of youth center combined with further training in the IT area. KOB is based in Roseland, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago.

Podcast

Since April 2019, Kate Bolduan, John Avalon (a presenter and analyst at CNN) and Harry Enten (a CNN employee who does statistical forecasting and surveys) have been producing a podcast called The Forecast Fest about the US presidential election in the year 2020. The last episode of the podcast series was published on March 19, 2020. During the 2020 COVID-19 crisis, she talked to her colleague Sanjay Gupta about how to talk to (your ) children about the consequences of such a pandemic and the countermeasures that have been taken to slow the rate of spread. She wrote a separate article on the CNN site.

Independent activities

Bolduan is committed to children, including the Free Arts New York City Organization, which takes care of the artistic education of children.

She is also committed to protecting mothers and newborns and their access to basic medical care.

In 2019 she took part in Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month .

Moderative activities

She is a presenter for the Fashion Tech Forum , or FTF for short. FTF has been promoting innovations in these areas (clothing and technology) since 2014 on the initiative of founder Karen Harvey.

In 2016, Bolduan moderated a discussion at the 2016 United Nations Global Compact Private Sector Forum. The UN initiative tries to convince private companies of fair conditions in production and trade without obligation.

In October 2018, Bolduan moderated a live conversation at the Marie Claire Power Trip Conference with Theresia Gouw and Singh Cassidy as guests in San Francisco .

On the occasion of the 10th WITW (Women In The World) summit in April 2019, she spoke to designer Diane von Fürstenberg . It was about the importance of fundamental character choices for modern women.

On August 13, 2019, Bolduan moderated a panel discussion at the Woodrow Wilson Center on Decoding the Disinformation Problem . The guests and Bolduan himself discussed so-called fake news and deliberate misinformation campaigns by individuals, organizations and entire states, mostly for political purposes.

At the 2019 Bloomberg Global Business Forum , she spoke to Michael Bloomberg , Mary D. Nichols (Chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB)), Will Marshall (the CEO of Planet Labs , a private American satellite imaging company that uses small satellites for environmental protection e.g. tracking down CO2 producers) and the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö on various political issues.

Personal life

In May 2010, Kate Bolduan married Michael David Gershenson, who works for the Carlyle Group . Their first daughter was born on September 25, 2014. Their second daughter was born on December 22, 2017.

The couple are part of the Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan.

Kate Bolduan is a proud left-hander , but plays all sports with her right. She loves ketchup , breakfast cereal and can go barefoot water skiing .
