Katja is a short form of the Russian given name Jekaterina ; for its origin and meaning see Katharina .

The name Katja became popular in Germany in the 1950s. In the early 1970s he was among the ten most frequently given female first names of the year. Its popularity declined in the early 1990s, so that today hardly any children are called Katja.
