Kermanshah ( Persian کرمانشاه, DMG Kermānšāh [ kʲermɔːnˈʃɔːh ], Kurdish کرماشان Kirmaşan ) is one of the 31 provinces in Iran . The capital is the city of the same name, Kermanshah .
1,952,434 people live in the province (2016 census). The province covers an area of 24,998 square kilometers. The population density is 78 inhabitants per square kilometer.
geography
The province is located in western Iran , on the border with Iraq . Most of the Kurds live in Kermanshah , but also a number of Lurs . The languages Sorani , South Kurdish and Gorani are common among the Kurds . The most important Kurdish tribe in the province are the Kalhor . Another Kurdish tribe are the Jaf of Jawanrud (Javanrud).
The capital Kermanshah (also: Kirmaschan) and the province bore the name Bachtaran after the Islamic Revolution , but the old form of the name is now in use again.

Attractions
The Behistun inscription is one of the most famous archaeological finds in the region. The inscription is at an altitude of 1300 m in the mountains. The inscription is written in three languages - Old Persian , Elamish and Akkadian - and tells of the deeds of King Darius I. There are three Parthian reliefs nearby , which are believed to be the oldest Parthian reliefs. They are no longer in good condition.
Taq-e-Bostan is a Sassian relief located six kilometers from Kermanshah. In the vicinity of the relief, a mountain river pours into a small lake. A relief shows the Sassanid king Chosrau II hunting. Another relief from the 19th century shows the Qajar ruler Fath Ali as a judge.
The Temple of Anahita is located in Kangavar . It dates from the Seleucid period .

When earthquake of Kermanshah in 2017 died in November more than 600 people.
Kermanshah is one of the areas where the protests in Iran took place in 2017/2018 .
Kurdish poets of the province
Well-known Kurdish poets were born in the province. These include:

- Khana Qubadi (1700-1760)
- Sarhang Almas Khan (mid 18th century)
- Sheyda Hewramí (1784-1852)
- Muhammad Wali Kermashani (1901–?)
- Shami Kermashani (Shamurad Mushtaq) (1927–?)
The British Nobel Prize for Literature 2007 Doris Lessing was born in 1919 in the provincial capital Kermanshah.
