history
The first written mention of the church of St. Nicholas was in 1288 . The patronage was the diocese of Lavant . The bailiwick was exercised by the rule Waldenstein. Preitenegg only received its own parish in the 15th century.
Turkish invasion
Carinthia was affected six times by Turkish invasions between 1473 and 1529 , and the Lavant Valley was plundered three times. When Sultan Süleyman marched against Vienna for the second time in the spring of 1532 , the Carinthian governor Veit Welzer had taken precautions: every tenth Carinthian was under arms and the Koralpe was heavily occupied. There were several small fights, but the Turks were pushed back. At the Packsattel, however, a crowd of 600 Turks broke in and reached St. Leonhard on horseback via Auerling and reached just before Hüttenberg before they were caught by Veit Welzer and forced to flee.
pest
At the beginning of 1680, when the plague raged in Hirschegg and Edelschrott , safety precautions were taken in Carinthia. Nevertheless, in May 1680, the farmer Lipp, commonly known as Pötzl, brought the disease into Preitenegg. As the population tried to hide the disease, three houses had already been affected and seven people had died when the plague inspector found out about it. On June 2nd, services in Preitenegg were canceled and all gatherings of people were forbidden. A doctor was appointed who, for a fee, moved into a caste in Auerling and looked after the plague sufferers with several nurses. The affected houses were burned down, the Pötzl house was turned into a hospital and surrounded by military guards. Nevertheless, 77 of a total of 188 inhabitants died in Preitenegg, 34 people died in Auerling.
Infrastructure
The community has always been characterized by traffic, as it is located on an important Alpine crossing, the Packsattel . This connection between Klagenfurt and Graz or Italy and Vienna / East Central Europe was only a mule track until the 18th century , then a simple driveway and was finally expanded into the Packer Bundesstraße between 1930 and 1936 . Since the completion of the south motorway (A 2), which runs further to the north, in the 1980s, Preitenegg has been largely relieved of multi-lane traffic.
population
At the time of the 2001 census, Preitenegg had 1,129 inhabitants, 99.1% of whom were Austrian citizens. 96.9% of the population supported the Roman Catholic and 1.6% the Evangelical Church. 1.3% of the population was without religious belief.
The number of inhabitants has been decreasing continuously since 1951. The reasons for this are a slightly negative birth balance and a high level of emigration. There are also a large number of professional commuters. |

Economy and Infrastructure
Forestry, wood processing and summer tourism are of particular economic importance.
politics
Municipal council
The municipal council has only had 11 members since 2015 due to the reduced population (previously 15) and has been composed as follows since the 2015 municipal council election :
mayor
The directly elected mayor has been Franz Kogler (ÖVP) since 2003.
The mayoral election on March 1, 2015 did not result in a decision, so a run-off election took place on March 15, 2015, in which both Mayor Franz Kogler and the challenger Rochus Münzer (SPÖ) received an equal number of (365) votes (turnout: 88.88 %), which required a second runoff election on March 29, 2015. With a turnout of almost 95%, Franz Kogler was able to prevail with 407 votes against Rochus Münzer (372 votes).
coat of arms
In Preitenegg's coat of arms, the green shield background reflects the agricultural and forestry character of the community, the golden left post covered with three black threads symbolizes the autobahn, the bishop's staff and the three spheres refer to the parish patron St. Nicholas .
The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads:
- "In green, a golden, widened left-hand post covered with three black threads - the two outer ones reduced - accompanied by three golden spheres placed at an angle and a golden, growing bishop's staff."
The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on March 2, 2004. The flag is gold-green with an incorporated coat of arms.

Trivia
In November 2015, a software error in navigation devices from Garmin became known, which was noted in the forum in April 2015. It resulted in motorists across Europe being shown an alternative route via Preitenegg for all traffic disruptions. The users of the navigation system had to wait until the beginning of 2016 for this error to be eliminated.
