geography

course

Forest valley channel of the upper reaches
The stream at the entrance to Thanheim

The Klingenbach arises on a recessed part of the eaves of the Hohe Schwabenalb about two kilometers west of Onstmettingen in the eastern edge of the perennial forest . It rises from a source at about 850  m above sea level. NHN below the K 7141 running in its upper forest valley channel from Pfeffingen in the south; there in the south, less than a kilometer away, the source of its receiving waters Eyach rises . After a few hundred meters it turns to the north-west run and now runs through its simply valley called Oberlauf-Kerbtal between the Irrenberg and the Hundsücken on the left and finally the Heiligenkopf on the right. This section of the valley is a straight line over 2.5 km long, parallel to the stream that runs here engraving of Bach to pass road called the national road 360. Even in the valley changes foothills of the western Swabian Alb over. At the first larger, still nameless tributary from the left, the stream emerges from the forest on the southern edge of the village of Thanheim von Bisingen west of the Heiligenkopf into the heavily populated meadow landscape at the Albfuß.

In the middle of Thanheim, next to the bridge on Ebersbergstrasse, the almost 2 km long Auchterbach flows from the east-southeast, which runs on the Albtrauf under the small saddle between Blasenberg ( 886.3  m above sea level ) and the closer Heiligenkopf ( 893.1  m above sea level). NHN ) at about 840  m above sea level. NHN arises; Less than half a kilometer to the east, the Schmiecha begins its long run to the Danube on the flat eastern slope. After the supply of the Auchterbach, the Klingenbach initially runs through Thanheim in a steeply sunk into the railing and then enters the Bisingen itself with almost no interruption in the corridor. There, after having passed the town center with the church to the left above the course, the Borrenbach flows towards him from this side, which rises in the south in the lower hillside forest at the foot of the Hundsrückens ( 931.4  m above sea level ). Even in the local area, this takes on a right inlet, which is also created in the forest a little below the sloping northern foothills of the hill mountain .

The Klingenbach now continues almost in a westerly direction, crosses under the Zollernalbbahn and the village of Steinhofen, which is built with Bisingen and belongs to it . A little after the Rapphof on the left slope, the route of the motorway-like B 27 crosses the course, which now deepens again, whereupon after the inflow of the Krebsbach from the northeast at about 494  m above sea level. NHN at the Bisingen sewage treatment plant, this blade of the Aftertal used by the B 463 is filled with forest. Finally, the Klingenbach flows into the area of the city of Balingen and soon flows into the Gießmühle in its Ostdorf district , 11.6 km below its source and at about 463  m above sea level. NHN , from the right and at the end southeast into the middle Eyach .

Catchment area

The Klingenbach drains an area of 17.9 km² with a portion of the High Swabian Alb in the upper reaches, but which is mainly in the western foothills of the Alb , in a west-northwest direction to the central Eyach . With a maximum width of 2 km, it is relatively narrow and stretches a little sinuously about 10 km from the Pfeffinger Höfle ( 896  m above sea level ), a little above the source to the mouth. From there, on the right watershed in the north, the catchment area of the smaller, downward Eyach tributary, Talbach , then flows on the northeast side just outside the Zimmerbach over the Starzel like the Eyach to the Neckar . After the Scheide has climbed the Albtrauf in a further south-easterly direction between Blasenberg ( 886.3  m above sea level ) and the Heiligenkopf ( 893.1  m above sea level ), the catchment area of the long Schmiecha begins on the other side ; because this runs in the opposite direction to the Danube , this section is part of the European main watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea up to Höfle . From Höfle from then a southern piece of the watershed draws on a western Albsporn to Irrenberg ( 921.3  m above sea level. NHN ) and Hundsrücken ( 931.1  m above sea level. NHN ), the other side is drained here from the upper and middle Eyach first from their uppermost course, then from medium-sized right tributaries. The two mountains are the highest elevations in the catchment area. On the subsequent southwestern watershed from the Hundsücken down into the foothills of the Alb and then to the mouth of the river, a medium-sized Eyach tributary with a name that changes several times competes, which after passing through Engstlatt, shortly before the Klingenbach, also flows into it as the Talbach .

Almost a third of the catchment area is forested, this part lies almost exclusively on the slopes below the Alb eaves in the valley trough of the upper reaches, which then widens strongly towards the foothills, especially on the left. On the Alb plateau there are only very small areas of land, most of them in the foreland, where today settlement areas of the large villages cover a noticeable part of the landscape.

The largest part of the total area belongs to Bisingen, a small one each in the east-southeast Albstadt , on the left watershed and on the lowest course to Balingen and on the right above the lowest course to Grosselfingen .

geology

Exposure of the upper middle Keuper in the mouth area

The Klingenbach runs on rock layers of the Jura almost to the end . It rises in the White Jura in the well-layered limestone or Imprint Gel Formation , briefly crosses a rubble zone on its beginning northwest run and then flows to about Bisingen in the Brown Jura , then on the west run in the Black Jura . The lower course from about the sewage treatment plant has dug one of the typical blades into the upper middle keuper.

A wide strip of floodplain sediment accompanies the course from Thanheim to below Steinhofen.
