Klosterwald is a district of the Upper Swabian market Ottobeuren .

geography

The hamlet of Klosterwald is about three kilometers north of Ottobeuren. The Weiherberg lies to the east of Kloster Wald .

history

In a document from Pope Eugene III. Klosterwald was confirmed as the property of the Ottobeuren monastery as early as 1152 . It was redeemed under Abbot Rupert . Abbot Isingrim covered the already existing chapel of St. Marx im Tal in 1167 with relics. Under Abbot Gallus Memminger , the chapel was demolished in 1594, rebuilt on the forest slope and consecrated in 1595. In 1681 Maria Mayer from Westerheim bought the Hermitage near the church and settled there with other women. A new building was moved into in 1685, in the same year the monastery became independent. It was not yet subject to any particular monastery rule. The abbess of the nunnery Nonnberg Maria Anna Ernestine von Thun is considered to be the actual founder of the nunnery St. Anna im Wald. On December 18, 1706, she sent nuns to Wald and caused those who had settled there to accept the Regula Benedicti . The monastery church of St. Anna was consecrated on October 4, 1729. This was integrated in the north wing. On May 16, 1800, the French occupied the monastery with about a thousand men for four days, looted and devastated it and caused a total damage of about 16,000 guilders. Three years later the monastery was secularized . In 1804 Sigmund von Schütz from Memmingen acquired the monastery buildings. They served as a country and hunting seat, the monastery church was used as a wooden warehouse. In 1865 the English Fraulein von Mindelheim bought the monastery complex, converted it into a boarding school for girls and renovated the monastery church in 1868. From 1943 to 1945 a hospital was housed in the monastery rooms. Until the 1990s there was a girls' secondary school with boarding school for the English Misses ( Maria Ward Institute).
