Stephansried is a district of the Upper Swabian market Ottobeuren .

Stephansried is about four kilometers north of Ottobeuren. The place is connected to the main town by a country road.

history

Stephansried 2010

Stephansried was created as a clearing settlement in the 8th or 9th century. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1083. Hartnid von Stephansried, a servant from Ottobeur, signed the founding document of the Ochsenhausen monastery on December 31, 1099. Around 1190 the Ottobeuren monastery had to leave the Stephansried fiefdom to the widow Wolfhart von Stephansried. Emperor Heinrich VI. put massive pressure on the monastery to surrender. The Ottobeuren monastery then acquired the place back from the widow through generous donations. Around 1200 Heinrich von Rutin was pastor of Hawangen and Stephansried. As the dean of the Ottobeuren chapter, whose main church was the parish church of Our Women in Memmingen , the Stephansried cleric Lantfrid was mentioned in 1229. The Stephansried parish church was incorporated into the Ottobeuren monastery in 1494 . In 1564 70 people lived in the place. In 1811 the place had 16 houses with 81 residents. A major fire in 1842 destroyed several properties, including the house where Sebastian Kneipp was born .

Attractions

The subsidiary church of St. Stephan , which was mentioned as early as 1167 in the course of the Isingrim reliquary donation , was rebuilt in 1687. The Sebastian Kneipp monument in Stephansried honors the town's greatest son.
