Life
Christian Jensen was born on Sylt in 1883 as the first of the three sons of the local history researcher and teacher Christian Jensen (1857–1936) and his wife Laura, born. Lorenzen born. His brothers were the doctor Dietrich Andreas Jensen (1889–1974) and Karl Jensen (1890–?). After graduating in 1902, Christian Jensen studied classical philology, first in Marburg , and from 1904 in Kiel . Here Professor Siegfried Sudhaus influenced him to study the literary papyri, which Jensen followed throughout his life. In 1906 he received his doctorate with the dissertation Philodemi peri oikonomias qui dicitur libellus ("The writing about the property management of Philodemos"). Shortly afterwards he passed the exam and worked for a few years as a high school teacher in Kiel and Wandsbek. In 1910 he achieved his habilitation in Marburg with the work De Menandri codice Cairensi ("About the Cairo Menander Manuscript"), which was also published in the Rheinisches Museum für Philologie (Volume 65, 1910).
After completing his habilitation, his academic career advanced rapidly. In 1912 he was appointed associate professor in Königsberg (successor to Hermann Mutschmann ), and in 1913 as full professor in Jena (successor to Friedrich Zucker ). In 1917 he returned to Königsberg as a full professor (predecessor Richard Wünsch ), in 1921 he moved to Kiel (predecessor Werner Jaeger , successor Ernst Bickel ), 1926 to Bonn (predecessor Anton Elter , successor Hans Herter ) and 1938 to Berlin (predecessor Werner Jaeger) . He died here on September 18, 1940 at the age of 57. He declined offers to the universities of Greifswald (1916), Hamburg (1919) and Vienna (1932).
As one of the leading papyrologists of his time, Jensen dealt intensively with the evaluation of literary papyrus finds. He was one of the best experts on the Philodemos of Gadara , for whom, in addition to his doctoral dissertation, he published an annotated edition of the 5th book On the Poems (1923). He also carried out extensive studies of sources and effects on Philodemos. He was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Society of Sciences and since April 29, 1939 a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
