The bubble ash ( Koelreuteria paniculata ), also called (Rispiger) bubble tree , is a species of the soap tree family (Sapindaceae). It originates from China and is the best known of the three species in the genus Koelreuteria .

description

The bubble ash grows as a deciduous tree or shrub . It reaches heights of growth up to about 14 meters and trunk diameters of about 50 centimeters. The cracked bark of the trunk is rough and brown - grayish with narrow orange furrows. The treetop is relatively wide with arching branches. The bark of young twigs is light copper brown. The leaf buds are about 2 mm small.

The alternate leaves are up to 35 cm long and pinnate unpaired with 7 to 15 leaflets . The short-stalked and rounded to pointed leaflets are egg-shaped to rhombic and 3 to 8 centimeters long; the leaflets are deeply serrate to lobed. The leaf spindle is greenish to reddish. The fresh leaf shoots in mid-May are initially dark red in color. The autumn color of the leaves is yellow to orange.

The flowers appear in July in loose and pendulous panicle inflorescences . The individual, short stalked flowers are about 1 cm in size and yellow.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits have an initially yellow-green, later light brown paper-like and bubble-shaped shell. The fruit shell is about 4 to 5 centimeters long and three-lobed; it contains three black, rounded seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 30.

Occurrence

The bubble ash is native to large parts of China ; they are found in the provinces of Anhui , Gansu , Hebei , Henan , Hubei , Jiangsu , Liaoning , Shaanxi , Shandong , Shanxi , Sichuan , Yunnan and Zhejiang .

The bubble ash is reliably hardy in Central Europe and is often planted as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.

Systematics

The first description by the Finnish botanist Erich G. Laxmann was published in 1772. Synonyms for Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. are: Koelreuteria apiculata Rehder & EHWilson , Koelreuteria bipinnata Franchet var. apiculata How & Ho , Koelreuteria chinensis (Murray) Hoffmanns. , Koelreuteria paniculata var. Apiculata (Rehder & EHWilson) Rehder , Sapindus chinensis Murray .

Cultivated forms

  • 'Fastigiata': This form was created in Kew in 1888 ; it grows columnar with almost vertical branches and, like the type, can reach a height of about 15 meters.
  • 'September': This form flowers later than the species and is considered less frost hardy. Possibly a hybrid of species.
