Konrad Kuhn is a German dramaturge and translator .

life and work

Kuhn studied theater studies and comparative literature at the Free University of Berlin . From 1994 to 1999 he was dramaturge at the Burgtheater Vienna . In 1999 he was in charge of the dramaturgy for Achim Freyer's production of Schumann's Genoveva at the Leipzig Opera and at the Wiener Festwochen . From 1999 to 2003 Kuhn was dramaturge, press spokesman and personal assistant to the artistic director at the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich. From 2009 to 2012 he was dramaturge at the Zurich Opera House , where he worked a. a. again with Freyer ( Moses and Aron ), as well as, u. a. with directors like Damiano Michieletto , Harry Kupfer or David Pountney . Since 2015 he has been a dramaturge at the Frankfurt Opera . Here he worked with Katharina Thoma ( Martha ), Álex Ollé / La Fura dels Baus ( Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher as a double evening together with Debussy's La damoiselle élue ), Tobias Kratzer ( L'Africaine and La forza del destino ), Christof Loy ( Norma ) and Anselm Weber ( Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk ) together.

His regular collaboration with Claus Guth began in Munich in 2003 with the world premiere of Awet Terterjan's opera Das Beben (based on Heinrich von Kleist's novella The Earthquake in Chili ), followed by the operetta project In mir klingt ein Lied (2007). At the Theater an der Wien in 2009 and 2013 Kuhn supervised Guth's staged versions of Handel's Messiah and Schubert's oratorio fragment Lazarus , as well as Guth's Monteverdi cycle, which was completed in 2015 with L'incoronazione di Poppea . Together with Guth, Kuhn also worked as Tannhäuser's dramaturge at the Vienna State Opera (2010) and at the world premiere of Aschemond or The Fairy Queen by Helmut Oehring and Henry Purcell at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden (2013) and Verdi's Rigoletto at the Bastille - Paris Opera (2016, also co-director) and Handel's Rodelinda at the Teatro Real Madrid (2017). The collaboration continued in 2018 at Oper Frankfurt with Lehár's operetta The Merry Widow and with the world premiere of the opera Bérénice (based on the tragedy of Racine ) by Michael Jarrell at the Opéra national de Paris ( Palais Garnier , conductor: Philippe Jordan ).

With the directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier he realized a. a. in Zurich the world premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie's Gesualdo (2010) and Rossini's Otello (2012), as well as at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto (2012) and Norma (2013). At the Salzburg Festival in 2014, Kuhn was appointed dramaturge for Dalbavie's second opera - Charlotte Salomon - the world premiere of which was staged by Luc Bondy .

The collaboration with the director and set designer Robert Wilson extended to Norma (Zurich 2011), Verdis Macbeth (São Paulo 2012, Bologna and Reggio Emilia 2013), Ionesco's Rhinocéros in Craiova (Romania) and Adam's Passion , a production with music by Arvo Pärt in the Noblessner Foundry Tallinn , Estonia . It continued in 2015 with La traviata ( Landestheater Linz and Oper Perm , conductor: Teodor Currentzis ) as well as a separate version of the play Oedipus , based on Sophocles , which premiered in the ancient amphitheater of Pompeii in summer 2018 , followed by performances in autumn 2018 at the Teatro Olimpico Vicenza and further performances in summer 2019 at the festival in Epidaurus . Most recently, a new production of Verdi's Otello was created at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival (conductor: Zubin Mehta ). In preparation is a staged performance of Handel's Messiah in the Mozart version at the Mozart Week 2020 (conductor: Marc Minkowski ) and resumption at the 2020 Salzburg Festival.

In 2019 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as a guest dramaturge for Tannhäuser , (production: Tobias Kratzer, conductor: Valery Gergiev ). In 2020 he will be in charge of the new Ring des Nibelungen (production: Valentin Schwarz ).

Konrad Kuhn has also worked as a translator and has, in addition to numerous surtitles frames and libretto translations, a book of poetry with texts of ostarmenischen poet Yeghishe Charents translated and edited (enlarged edition 2015) and together with Magnus Chrapowski the short novel Les deux qui se croisent / Two The Crosses by the surrealist painter and author Óscar Domínguez (2017). From the summer semester 2013 to the summer semester 2014 he also worked as a lecturer at the University of Vienna and in the winter semester 2017/18 at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Konrad Kuhn was married to the Armenian soprano Hasmik Papian until 2017 , with whom he has a daughter.
