Konrad Wickler grew up with three siblings in pre-war Berlin as the son of a teacher and a graduate engineer. After the war ended, the family fled to the West. Konrad Wickler spent his high school years in Siegen and then began training as a camera assistant at the FWU ( Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education ) in Munich, which studied at the German Institute for Film and Television (DIFF - forerunner of University of Television and Film Munich ). From 1959 to 1962, Wickler studied at the State College for Photography in Munich.

Professional career

In 1963, Wickler was permanently employed as a cameraman and director at Bayerischer Rundfunk . There he shot with directors Percy Adlon , Hans Jürgen Syberberg , Reinhard Raffalt , Antony Isaacs, Jörg Grünler , among others . In the early 1970s, Konrad Wickler and BR editor Harald Hohenacker developed a pre-school children's program for television, the series Das feuerrote Spielmobil , in which he worked as a director, cameraman and actor. With his portrayal as Conny in the series, he became one of the favorite characters in the children's program. The series was awarded the Golden Camera in 1972 as well as the Adolf Grimme Prize.

Together with the director Katja Raganelli , he founded Diorama Film GmbH in Munich in 1976 to produce cultural documentaries. Women behind the camera were among the most important topics of the company, and documentaries were made about the silent film directors Dorothy Arzner , Margery Wilson and Lois Weber , the silhouette film pioneer Lotte Reiniger , as well as contemporary directors such as Agnès Varda , Margarethe von Trotta , Valie Export and Mai Zetterling .
