La Cage aux Folles ( A Cage Full of Fools ) is a two-act musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman to the book by Harvey Fierstein .

history

In 1973 Jean Poiret's play La Cage aux Folles premiered in Paris . It became a huge tabloid hit. It was played non-stop at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal for seven years. At the same time, the production came onto the stages worldwide. In 1978 Édouard Molinaro's theatrical version A Cage Full of Fools with Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazzi was made . In the US, the film became one of the greatest hits of a non-American production.

In 1983, people on Broadway became aware of the ideal template. For the musical stage, old master Jerry Herman wrote catchy melodies (including Hello, Dolly! ). Showstopper is certainly the song I am what I am ("I am what I am"), which was sung by various performers, including Gloria Gaynor , as an independent title. The fact that many women sing the title is remarkable in that the lyrics represent the outing of a gay man who seeks respect and recognition. The song has cult status in gay and transsexual circles .

action

Georges has been running Club La Cage aux Folles in St-Tropez for many years . The celebrated star of the frivolous and glittering travesty shows is Georges' partner Albin, who inspires the audience as Zaza . One day a visitor is announced: son Jean-Michel, a “youthful sin” of the homosexual Georges. The offspring has found the love of his life: a girl named Anne. The upcoming family reunion has a catch: The fiancé's father, a politician and arch-conservative moral guardian, wants to get to know the parents of the future son-in-law. Georges must therefore quickly create a middle-class, conservative environment for the visit. In addition to Georges' unsuitable living and working environment, a more fundamental problem has to be solved: Where to get a “mother” from? Albin, respectively the stage character Zaza, offers his / her services helpful. After a lot of confusion and a lot of comedy, a happy ending is announced.
