Long legs, short lies and a touch of truth ... (Original title: Assassination of a High School President , alternatively: The Sophomore ) is an American comedy film from 2008 . Directed by Brett Simon , the script was written by Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski .

action

Bobby Funke attends the Catholic St. Donovan's High School as a sophomore in his second year (i.e. as a sophomore as in the original title) and is not very popular. Although he is convinced that he is a gifted author, he has not yet completed a single article for the school newspaper . He dreams of taking part in a summer program for aspiring journalists at the university . The school is run by Principal John T. Kirkpatrick, who is considered strict and often tells of his experiences as a soldier.

Clara, the editor-in-chief , tells Bobby to conduct an interview with Paul Moore, the president of the student council. Bobby tries, but he can't get a reasonable story out of him. He is also bullied by Paul's friends. The next morning, Principal Kirkpatrick discovers that the SAT tests have been stolen from an office safe . Kirkpatrick picks up the "usual suspects" among the students, including Bobby, in order to interrogate them. Respondents can all prove their innocence, but Kirkpatrick warns that he will be watching them from now on.

When the student representative Francesca persuades Bobby to help get the test back, Bobby sniffs a story. He undertakes a series of investigations and eventually forges a connection with Paul, who is Francesca's head boy and boyfriend. Then he writes an article in which he directly accuses Paul. Kirkpatrick then forces Paul to open his cabinet, from which the documents fall out. As a result of his successful research, Bobby becomes one of the most popular students in St. Donovan's. Clara decides to forward Bobby's article to Northwestern University, which then invites him to the summer program. Bobby wins the respect of the entire faculty right down to Rector Kirkpatrick.

The greater Bobby's popularity, the greater his skepticism about whether everything was right. Paul confronts Bobby and protests his innocence. Bobby wonders if the president is actually a thief or the victim of a conspiracy. He explores Paul's friends, who are all members of the student council, even more intensively. Bobby, who is now Francesca's new boyfriend, discovers during his driving test that the Mullen brothers, along with the school's treasurer , are visiting several pharmacies to buy prescription drugs. They use a recipe pad from their father. Through further research, Funke finds out that the school has been dealing with drugs for some time and that the Mullen Brothers, the Treasurer, and Marlon Piazza faked the SATs so that weaker students would have to buy their drugs because of their depression . Since Paul Moore had found this out earlier, he was charged with theft. Marlon and Francesca are step-siblings and Bobby accidentally discovers that the two are having an affair. Only now does he realize that Francesca is one of the perpetrators and that he was fooled by Francesca the whole time and only got the information that he was supposed to find.

Bobby reveals all of this to Marlon when he is with him in the principal's office. Marlon threatens Bobby that he will throw him out the window and portray it as a suicide. This threat and the accompanying confession of Marlon is broadcast over the in-house loudspeaker system and heard by everyone. Bobby's friends and the principal storm into the office, followed by Francesca and other students. You save him before Marlon can throw him out the window. Francesca tries to regain Bobby's trust before she is punished by Kirkpatrick. In the final scene, Bobby Funke walks across the corridor with Clara Diaz.

Reviews

Justin Chang wrote on January 24, 2008 in the online edition of Variety magazine , Assassination of a High School President mix elements of a high school movie with a film noir and correspond to the mainstream. The film suffers from weaknesses of such hybrids and is stuck between the serious implementation of the premise and its parody. The scriptwriters had quoted Chinatown and other "classics of the genre of crime films" with allusions .

The organizers of the Sundance Film Festival wrote that the film was "intricately handmade" and contained numerous twists and turns. They praised the "perfect" cast who would create a "hellish" high school where anything seemed possible.
