Lazar Gosman

Lazar Gosman ( Russian Лазарь Гозман / Lasar Gosman , May 27, 1926 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union - June 8, 2019 in New York ) is a Soviet - American violinist who played an important role in the field of classical music . During his musical career he gained international fame and recognition through his activities as music director , concert master and professor for violin.

Life

After his studies at the State Academy of Music in Moscow Lazar Gosman moved its effect of gravity to Leningrad , where he served as concertmaster of the Philharmonic , and over a period of 17 years of time as music director of the Chamber Orchestra worked. At the same time he was a member of the Leningrad Academy of Music until he left his home country in 1977 for political reasons . As an immigrant , he received in the United States a job as concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra in St. Louis , Missouri . He became a member of the local music college and built the chamber orchestra Kammergild St. Louis. In 1979 Lazar Gosman founded the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra , which gained international recognition with the film "A Musical Passage". In 1984, Lazar Gosman and his wife were officially naturalized by the US authorities . At the State University of Stony Brook near New York , he finally settled as professor of violin and chamber music . Together with Lisa Kim , Lazar Gosman founded the music institute “Grazioso Summer” in Switzerland in 1995 . He then retired to Braunschweig for a few years . As an emeritus , Lazar Gosman lived with his wife in Long Island , New York until his death .

Musical career

education

As a student of Dawid Oistrakh, Lazar Gosman received his diploma with the highest distinction at the Moscow Conservatory in 1949 .

Leningrad (USSR)

Following his training, Lazar Gosman joined the Philharmonic Orchestra in Leningrad , where he was concertmaster until his emigration in 1977. In the 1950s and 60s he was also a member of the Leningrad Conservatory . In addition, he was music director of the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra for 17 years. Under his leadership, the ensemble worked on works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten and, together with artists such as Emil Gilels and Gidon Kremer, developed a repertoire of more than 200 chamber music works. Many of the recordings made during this period were released in the United States as well as in Europe and Japan .

St. Louis (USA)

After his immigration in 1977 Lazar Gosman worked in the USA as concertmaster of the symphony orchestra in St. Louis, Missouri . In recognition of his work, he was appointed full professor by the St. Louis Conservatory that same year. In addition to this function, he built up the Chamber Orchestra St. Louis Chamber Orchestra, at whose concerts he worked as a conductor .

New York (USA)

Until his retirement , Lazar Gosman worked as professor of violin and chamber music at the State University of Stony Brook in New York State. Because of his successful teaching activities , many of his students have achieved important positions and awards around the world, such as Rachel Huang .

The film "A Musical Passage" was made in 1984 under the direction of Jim Brown . It is a political documentary about the fate of Lazar Gosman and the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra he founded in 1979. With the help and support of numerous friends, Lazar Gosman founded the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra , initially known as the Soviet Emigre Orchestra , which traveled through North and South America as well as Europe and Israel . The film tells the story of the group of musicians of Jewish origin and their plan to leave the Soviet Union to work as independent artists in the USA . The focus is on the fate as a result of the suppression by the Soviet regime. In addition to the film, a correspondingly implemented theatrical performance of the topic, which was performed in over 260 cities, received positive criticism .

Concerts

As a soloist , Lazar Gosman has performed regularly with his Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra at New York's Carnegie Hall and at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts . Further concerts followed both at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington .

Publications

Lazar Gosman initially recorded works by Shostakovich , Borodin and Tchaikovsky for CBS , Musicmasters , Musical Heritage Society and Sony Classical in the USA . In the recent past, many of his arrangements were finally released by Kalmus Records .
