Le Sap is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Sap-en-Auge with 862 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy . The inhabitants are called Sapiens .

Le Sap is located on the northern edge of the department between the Pays d'Ouche and the Pays d'Auge , 68 kilometers southeast of Le Havre , 29 kilometers southeast of Lisieux , 10.4 km southeast of Vimoutiers and 12.5 km east of Camembert .

Le Sap is assigned to a climate zone of type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger ): warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.

history

In 1100 the community was first mentioned as Sappum . The name Sap is of Celtic origin, sappo ( French sapin ) means fir .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Le Sap and Orville were merged to form a commune nouvelle with the name Sap-en-Auge and have the status of a commune déléguée in the new municipality. The administrative headquarters are located in Le Sap. The municipality of Le Sap was part of the Argentan arrondissement and the canton of Vimoutiers .

Le Sap houses a museum for calvados production with an attached orchard. His motto is: de la Pomme au Calvados , from apple to calvados.

Buildings

The Fort Montpellier is a medieval castle in Le Sap. It has had its name since 1153, when Henry II of England appointed the Comte de Montpellier governor because he himself became heir to the throne of England. In 1378 the castle was destroyed and replaced by a residential building in the 15th century. During the Ancien Régime (absolutist rule in France), Fort Montpellier was the seat of the Viscount of Sap. During the Second World War it was the seat of the German command post.

The Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church was built in the 14th century. In 1562 it was burned down in the course of the Huguenot Wars , only the choir remained. A new nave was built in the 16th century. The choir was enlarged in the 17th century. The sacristy was built in the same period . The entrance is designed in the style of Henry IV of France (1553–1610).

Regular events

Annual events include a flea market on the 1st Sunday in May, a horse race on the 2nd Sunday in August, a village festival on August 15th and the festival of cider à l'ancienne (traditional) on the 2nd weekend in November.

The image of the community is characterized by forest and pastures. There is an on-site agricultural and dairy cooperative and a company that makes fishing supplies.
