Leslie Odom Jr.
Leslie Odom Jr. (born August 6, 1981 in Queens , New York ) is an American film actor , musical artist , producer and singer. The Grammy and Tony Award winner gained greater fame for his role as Aaron Burr in the musical Hamilton .
Life
Leslie Odom Jr. was born in New York but raised in Philadelphia with his parents and little sister . In Pittsburgh he attended Carnegie Mellon University . After graduating there in 2003, he moved to Los Angeles .
After first television appearances in two episodes of The Big House in the role of Lamont and in nine episodes of CSI: Miami , engagements in the series Vanished and Big Day followed . His first role in a feature film was in Anthony Hemingway's Red Tails . This was followed by major roles in the television series Smash , Person of Interest and Law & Order: New York .
Odom is also active in musical theater. Among other things, he worked in Los Angeles and on Broadway on the musical Leap of Faith (2010 and 2012), Off-Broadway on the musical Venice (2013).
In the musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda on the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton Odom played the lead role of Aaron Burr , friend and opponent of Hamilton. Odom was also involved in the 2015 album of the same name , which contains recordings of the Broadway staging of the musical.
In 2014 Leslie Odom Jr. released his solo album of the same name. It mainly contained pieces from musicals and was re-released in 2016 with a different tracklist. In the same year Simply Christmas was released with jazz versions of American Christmas carols, and in 2019 the album Pop and RnB album Mr.
On the occasion of the opening of the US Open on August 29, 2016 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City, Odom sang his song Easy Lover with Phil Collins . He also appeared in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show .
In Kenneth Branagh's 2017 Murder on the Orient Express , he played the role of Dr. Arbuthnot, starring Will in Takashi Doscher's science fiction drama Only .
At Super Bowl LII in early February 2018 , Odom sang America the Beautiful just before kick-off , while Pink sang the US national anthem.
In Thomas Kail's musical film Hamilton , Odom played the role of Burr as in the musicals . In 2020 he won the Down Beat Critics Poll 2020 as best male singer in the Rising Star category .
