The Wittenbergen lighthouse , together with the Tinsdal lighthouse, has formed the leading light line Wittenbergen - Tinsdal for ships traveling down the Elbe in the Hamburg district of Rissen .
The construction of steel lattice towers began in 1899, coinciding with the lighthouse Billerbek that until 1960 along with the lighthouse Tinsdal the leading lights line Billerbek- Tinsdal formed. Due to a fairway change the Lower Elbe, the 30 meter high and four were tons of heavy Unterfeuer offset by nine meters to the south in September 1905th
During a further renovation in 1927, the kerosene lamp with otter screens was replaced by a fully glazed liquid gas lantern with belt optics , a 375 millimeter focal length leading light line and a 187.5 millimeter focal length cross- brand light. The tower has been electrified since 1966, has been remote-controlled since 1979 and is now equipped with double signal headlights (2 x 60 watts ) with a visibility of 14.3 nautical miles .
The lighthouse stands Wittenbergen since March 31, 2004 under monument protection and is one of the oldest steel to the construction -Leuchttürmen stairs tube with hip rafters .
