A Linnaeus medal

The Linnean Medal (Linnean Medal) of the Linnean Society of London is an award presented by this company to deserving scientists. It has been awarded since 1888, the company's 100th anniversary year. The Linné Medal is the highest distinction given by the Linnean Society of London. It is awarded alternately to a botanist and a zoologist each year, or to a botanist and a zoologist in the same year, which has been common practice since 1958.

Until 1976 the medal was made of gold . On one side there is a portrait of Carl von Linné with the inscription "CAROLUS LINNÆUS"; on the other side of the medal are the inscription “SOCIETAS LINNÆANA OPTIME MERENTI” (formerly “LINNÆENSIS” instead of “LINNÆANA”) as well as the year of award and the name of the scientist honored.
