The Oscar (actually Academy Award of Merit , German honorary award of the academy) has been given annually to filmmakers by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1929 . It is considered the most important award of its kind. The year indicates the year of the award.

At the Oscar awards, Austrian filmmakers have been nominated 113 times and awarded one of the coveted trophies 37 times. Of the 20 Oscar winners from Austria, all except Maximilian Schell , Stefan Ruzowitzky , Christoph Waltz and Michael Haneke had emigrated to the United States , most of which they were also citizens of. Most of them were Jews, which, due to the spread of National Socialism in Europe from 1933, was also the reason for many of them to emigrate.

The most frequently awarded Oscar was Billy Wilder , who won six Oscars and an honorary Oscar for his life's work. The most frequently nominated was the film composer Max Steiner , who missed a total of 21 times between 1935 and 1956, but also won three Oscars. Erich von Stroheim , Josef von Sternberg and Otto Preminger were nominated but never awarded . Fritz Lang received no nominations .
