List of commissions of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Commissions are the original form of research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), which has existed since its foundation in 1847. The academy's other research facilities are now “companies”, “institutes” and “research centers”. The commissions carry out a large part of the research work carried out within the academy. A group of researchers - the "Commission" - acts as the sponsor and governing body and meets regularly, but at least once a year.

The members of a commission are elected for a maximum term of five years; re-election is possible without limitation. In the absence of appropriate experts, people who are not members of the Academy can also be elected to a committee. A real or corresponding member is elected as chairman of a commission from among its members, who is responsible for convening and chairing the meetings as well as for the scientific and economic management.

The commission fulfills both steering and supervisory functions over the course of research and, despite its old age, is still a powerful research model, especially in research areas in the humanities, social sciences and law. Commissions can be set up by the two classes of the academy (i.e. the mathematical-scientific and the philosophical-historical), but there are also joint commissions (i.e. the entire academy).

List of all commissions

The following list of the commissions (or the institutions with the rank of a commission or sub-commission such as committees, working groups, etc.) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is based on the publication [Hittmair / Hunger] from 1997. It is divided into three parts:

  • Active commissions
  • Commissions that have merged into another body
  • Dissolved Commissions

Within these three areas, the commissions are arranged chronologically according to the year they were founded.
