Richard Georg Plaschka

Richard Georg Plaschka (born July 8, 1925 at Vöttau Castle (today Bítov in South Moravia , Czech Republic); † October 27, 2001 in Vienna ) was an Austrian historian.

Life

From 1958 to 1988, Plaschka was director of the Austrian Institute for East and Southeast Europe. From 1967 to 1988 he was university professor for Eastern European history at the University of Vienna , from 1981/1982 he was rector of the University of Vienna.

As a native Sudeten he joined as a student of K.Ö.HV Nordgau Vienna and was also a member of the KaV Saxo-Sydney Prague in Vienna later ÖCV the Cartellverbindung the expellees from Bohemia and Moravia in Austria, in the re-establishment in 1951 in Vienna, he was significantly involved.

Plaschka was a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and one of the leading representatives of Austrian Habsburg research, and throughout his life tried to establish connections with his colleagues in Central and Eastern Europe.

Richard Georg Plaschka Prize

Plaschka is the namesake of a prize that has been awarded every two years by the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2004. It is aimed at scientifically active persons who have made exceptional achievements in the field of East, East Central and Southeast European history and are younger than 40 years. The prize is endowed with € 3,700. The first prizewinner in 2004 was Emilia Hrabovec (University of Vienna).
