List of pastels by Édouard Manet
The list of pastels by Édouard Manet contains the entirety of the pictures drawn with pastel chalk by the French artist Édouard Manet . Although technically they are drawings, these pictures are occasionally counted among the paintings of Manet. The authors Rouart and Wildenstein list the pastels in their most recently published catalog raisonné in the second volume at the beginning of the drawings, while the first volume is reserved for the paintings. Earlier authors, on the other hand, did not separate the paintings and pastels, but instead put them together chronologically.
The chronological allocation of the individual works is problematic, as these are usually not signed and only little contemporary information is available. The oldest preserved pastel painting is certainly the depiction of Tête d'enfant from Manet's apprenticeship in the 1850s in the studio of the painter Thomas Couture . After that, he doesn't seem to have been interested in this medium for about two decades. Next, two pictures of his wife Suzanne Manet were probably taken . The works Madame Manet en buste and Portrait de Madame Manet sur un canapé bleu are in some cases dated to 1873 and 1874, respectively, while other authors see the time these pictures were taken a few years later. Various authors assume that Manet was inspired by his friend Edgar Degas in the 1870s to devote himself to pastel painting. Most of the pastels were created in the last years of Manet's life between 1878 and 1883. During this time he suffered from health restrictions, especially from painful paralysis in his left leg. Since he had problems standing for long periods of time, pastel drawing offered a welcome alternative to oil painting. Pastels with the comparatively faster way of working were easier to carry out for Manet than the technically more complex and sometimes large-format oil paintings.
The motifs are mostly portraits, most of which are friends of the artist. The male portraits are also people from the circle of friends. There are also some nudes, tavern or café scenes and motifs from the theater. Pastel painting also gave Manet the opportunity to try out certain things. There are some motifs that he executed first as pastel and then later in oil. An example of this is the stage performance Hamlet et fantôme, which was then followed by two oil paintings with the motif of the singer Faure as Hamlet . The repetition of a motif, such as the portraits of Mademoiselle Hecht, Madame Guillemet, Suzette Lemaire, Méry Laurent or Irma Brunner, testify to Manet's delight in varying the same theme.
list
Most of the information in the list is taken from the catalog raisonné by Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein from 1975. Accordingly, the titles are given in French. The additional specification of German titles was deliberately omitted, as these are often available in several variants. The number in the catalog raisonné of Rouart / Wildenstein Volume II (RW II) from 1975 is given under WV 1975 . In contrast to the catalog raisonné, the collection column shows the current owner as far as is known.
