The list of winter storms in the British Isles 2017-18 names the storms that had an impact on the British Isles in the second year of the joint naming of winter storms by the British Met Office and Ireland's Met Éireann .

background

In 2015, the Met Office and Met Éireann announced a joint pilot project to name storm warnings; At the same time, the population was asked to submit name suggestions as part of the Name our Storms campaign. For the first time for the 2015-16 winter season, a list of names was published based on first names common in both the United Kingdom and Ireland . At the beginning of September 2016, a new list of names was announced for the 2017-18 winter season. Names are given in the UK as soon as a storm is rated amber ('be prepared') or 'red' ('take action') in the warnings of the National Severe Weather Warning Service.

Aileen was the first storm of the season for which the Met Office issued an amber storm warning on September 12th due to wind speeds in the counties of Cheshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire on the evening of September 12th and morning of September 13th around 90 km / h and gusts of 120 km / h were expected on the coast and in exposed locations. For parts of Northern Ireland, Northern England and the south of Scotland, yellow warnings of heavy rain with rain amounts of 30 to 40 mm were also issued within six to nine hours.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Bainbridge , North Yorkshire , where it fell 35.4mm overnight. The strongest gust was recorded at 134 km / h at The Needles on the Isle of Wight and the strongest gust in the UK was observed in Mumbles , Wales.

Power outages affected approximately 60,000 households in Wales and almost 9,000 others in England during the storm.

Ex-Ophelia

Duration 15.-16. October
Top gust: 191 km / h
Lowest central air pressure: 959 or 962.2 hPa
Victim: 3
Power outages: 360,000+

On October 12, the UK's Met Office issued amber weather warnings on the extra-tropical remnants of Hurricane Ophelia , which was expected to hit the British Isles on October 16. Met Éireann responded on the same day by announcing that the forecast models still contained uncertainties to media reports on the possible impact of the storm on Ireland and asked the population to pay attention to the predictions as soon as the probabilities increased and the storm approached the island. On October 14, Met Éireann issued a red warning for Counties of Galway , Mayo , Clare , Cork and Kerry , valid for October 16 and 17, and an orange warning for the rest of the country. On October 15, the Met Office published orange warnings for the six counties in Northern Ireland and updated the yellow warnings for England, Wales and Scotland. On the morning of October 16, the Met Office extended the warning level to orange for parts of west Wales, south-west Scotland and the Isle of Man .

In County Waterford , Aglish, a woman was killed by a tree that fell on the car she was sitting in, and so was a man in Dundalk , County Louth , while another man was killed in Cahir , County Tipperary while he was with the chainsaw was working on clearing a fallen tree. In Ireland around 360,000 households were affected by power outages, around 15,000 households in Northern Ireland were without electricity. Numerous roads and some railway lines were blocked by fallen trees and broken branches.

The name was adopted in the US-NWS scheme as WMO-RSMC for tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic. This was the first such case since the Met Office / Met Éireann system was introduced last year.

Brian

Brian on October 20th

Duration October 19, 2017 -
Lowest central air pressure: 956 hPa (offshore)

On October 13, the American National Hurricane Center designated a low pressure area in the tropical Atlantic Ocean east of the Lesser Antilles as Invest 92L and initially gave the system a forty percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone. The system slowly moved northwest, bringing heavy rain and flooding to the island of Puerto Rico, already battered by Hurricane Maria, and the British and American Virgin Islands, before turning northeast. On October 16, however, the NHC stopped observing the system, which had passed Bermuda without any significant impact , because it was no longer expected to develop into a tropical system.

As the area moved rapidly eastward across the open Atlantic Ocean, it began to intensify rapidly , developing the system into a powerful nontropical storm. On October 19, Met Éireann issued an orange storm warning for Counties Galway and Mayo on October 21, thus activating the name Brian for this storm . The UK Met Office did not anticipate an extraordinary storm for Britain , but the UK Environment Agency indicated that a storm surge could coincide with the normal arrival of the tidal range, causing flooding on the south coast of England.

For the western and northern islands and northern Scotland, the yellow warnings were increased to amber on December 6th. Met Éireann issued yellow warnings for counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.

Dylan got its name from Met Éireann on December 29th because strong winds were expected in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the south of Scotland on the night of December 30th to 31st, with gusts of up to 130 km / h on the Irish west coast.

Top gust: 96 mph / 155 km / h, Knock Airport , County Mayo .
Lowest central air pressure: 967 hPa
Victim: 3
Power outages: ~ 150,000 households in Ireland

Met Éireann named Eleanor on January 1 and imposed the amber warning level because gusts of wind of 110 to 130 km / h were expected for the evening of January 2. The British Met Office issued yellow wind warnings for January 2nd and 3rd, which were extended to orange for northern England and southern Scotland a few hours before the storm hit the British coast .

On the approach to Ireland, Eleanor - known in Germany as Burglind - brought heavy rain and stormy weather with gusts of wind that reached 152 km / h at Knock Airport in the Republic of Ireland. The strongest gust in the United Kingdom was measured at 145 km / h at the Orlock Head mountain weather station in Great Dun Fell. As the storm continued to move northeast, it looked like a sting jet was forming , but it didn't. Eleanor created thunderstorms and heavy hail in England and Wales. The greatest property damage occurred in Northern Ireland.

affected areas Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Norway
Duration 23–24 January
Lowest central air pressure: 959 hPa
Power outages: hundreds of households in Ireland

Storm Georgina officially got its name on January 23, when the low pressure area approaching the British Isles suddenly began to deepen explosively to 959 hPa . The storm affected the northern part of the British Isles, causing blackouts in the west and south of the Republic of Ireland that affected hundreds of households. Fallen trees blocked several streets. There were widespread gusts in the range up to 135 km / h, around 120 km / h on the Isle of Wight and Anglesey ; a top gust of 225 km / h was measured in a ski area in the Highlands . In addition, there was heavy rainfall in Northern Ireland and Scotland and, in connection with thaw, various floods; in Dumfries , for example, the River Nith burst its banks. Landslides and rockfalls at Winchburgh in West Lothian and at Kirkconnel in Dumfries and Galloway interrupted the rail links Glasgow – Edinburgh and Glasgow – Carlisle. Because of the strong wind, the ferries to the islands of Arran, Cumbrae, Lismore and Iona as well as between Scrabster and Stromness have been suspended.

The system then crossed the North Sea and had an impact on Norway.
