The hurricane Friederike , called tempête David in France , moved as a severe storm with gusts of wind on January 18, 2018 from the west through Ireland , the United Kingdom , the Netherlands , Belgium and Germany to Poland . Ten people died and the insured loss amounted to one billion euros. The storm was the strongest in central Germany since Hurricane Kyrill in 2007, but was much smaller than Kyrill. Only on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains did it reach hurricane strength in a ten-minute medium wind, not in the lowlands.

Meteorological overview

Friederike formed around January 16, 2018 off New Brunswick and Labrador and then moved eastward across the North Atlantic. A day later the center was south of Iceland and west of Ireland.

Wind peaks mountains
Chunks 205 km / h
Fichtelberg 174 km / h
Zugspitze 158 km / h
Feldberg 144 km / h
Bare branches 142 km / h
Wind peaks lowland

In contrast to Hurricane Kyrill, whose strongest gusts were measured with the thunderstorms along its cold front, the gusts at Hurricane Friederike were distributed differently; they occurred only in a strip about 200 km wide southwest of the depression behind the cold front and were generated by a sting jet . Dynamic processes lower the jet stream into the lower layers of the air, which means that strong gusts with enormous damage can occur in a relatively small area.

Effects

British Isles and Northern France

Top gusts United Kingdom
Tibenham 83 mph (133.6 km / h)
Aberdaron 78 mph (125.5 km / h)

The foothills of the storm first passed over Ireland, England and northern France on the night of January 18. In Ireland and the UK, the impact was minimal. On its back, Friederike brought extensive snowfalls to Scotland and northern England. The stations Eskdalemuir (35 cm), Drumalbin (25 cm), Tulloch Bridge (21 cm) and in Spadeadam (20 cm) reported the highest snow depths .

In northern France, the Pas-de-Calais and Nord departments were particularly affected; The peak gusts reached 136 km / h at Cap Gris-Nez , 126 km / h in Lillers , 120 km / h in Lille and 113 km / h in Cambrai and Arras , with the values in the interior being stronger than in Hurricane Kyrill 2007. Of the aforementioned values, this applies to Lille, Lillers and Arras.

Belgium

On the Belgian North Sea coast, Friederike reached storm strength and for a short period the strength of a severe storm. The strongest gusts were measured at Antwerp Airport (119 km / h), in Zeebrugge (112 km / h) and in Stabroek and Schaffen (both 108 km / h). In a forest south-east of Brussels , a woman driver was killed by a falling tree. Operations in the port of Ghent had to be stopped on the morning of January 18th due to the strong winds. In Meeuwen-Gruitrode the roof of a school was covered by the storm. All 57 students could be brought to safety.

Netherlands

The storm reached the south west coast of the Netherlands in the morning with wind force 9 and later freshened up to a heavy storm, at times a very heavy storm. It then moved eastwards through the Netherlands and was strongest in the middle of the country. At noon the wind quickly lost its strength in the west of the country, and an hour later in the east of the Netherlands too. All over the country, with the exception of the far north, there were wind gusts of over 100 km / h. The strongest gust in the Netherlands was measured at 143 km / h in Hoek van Holland . A gust of 124 km / h in Twente was the strongest gust of wind measured there since 1951, and in De Bilt the gust of 122 km / h was the strongest gust there since hurricane Daria in January 1990.

In the Netherlands, the fire brigade had to deploy 10,000 calls and rail services were suspended nationwide. The Schiphol airport was temporarily closed, so were canceled more than 300 flights. Numerous roads have been blocked by fallen trees and trucks. More than 60 accidents occurred when trucks overturned. In The Hague , the wind was so strong that people on the street lost their footing and fell while walking. Heavy objects like shipping containers were knocked over by the wind. There were two storm-related deaths: in Olst a man was killed by a branch, in Enschede a man fell victim to a falling tree in his car.

Germany

Victims and property damage

Eight people died nationwide.

The consequences of the storm when trees were thrown by the wind were worse than the previous storm Burglind at the beginning of January 2018 because of the soil softened by the rain . According to initial estimates by the Association of the German Insurance Industry , the storm caused property damage of half a billion euros Damage increased to one billion euros. The damage to buildings then amounted to 900 million euros, that of vehicles to 100 million. With Kyrill eleven years earlier it had been more than two billion euros. The rail network of the railway was damaged on 200 route sections.

Deutsche Bahn

Waiting travelers in Hanover main station on January 19th

The German train set because of the weather conditions over the course of the 18th and partly on 19 January the long-distance nationwide and regional services in the states of Lower Saxony , North Rhine-Westphalia , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia completely one. The following day there were still some blocked sections of the route. The railway had warned of restrictions on train traffic the day before.

North Rhine-Westphalia

North Rhine-Westphalia was the first and most severely affected state by Friederike. The first gale-force winds hit at 10:30 Munster . In the next few hours, gusts of more than 100 km / h were measured in most regions, peak values were in the lowlands of Wuppertal , Ahaus and Münster / Osnabrück Airport at 126 km / h. 143 km / h were achieved on the Kahler Asten .

Train cancellation at Essen Central Station

In Emmerich am Rhein , a 59-year-old was killed by a tree. In Lippstadt a truck driver died in a traffic accident in Sundern a firefighter in action.

In North Rhine-Westphalia it was decided the evening before that lessons at many schools would be canceled. In schools where lessons were to take place, the pupils were given the option to attend lessons in consultation with their legal guardians. However, it was usually canceled before the main storm field occurred in order to ensure a safe return route. However, the poor information policy of the school ministry and the poor crisis management of the schools caused criticism. Parents reported that schools stopped classes and sent students on their way home during the worst of the storms.

Siren alarm was triggered in the city of Duisburg to call on the population to go to safe, closed rooms. In Düsseldorf , the Rheinbahn stopped tram, light rail and bus traffic until 4 p.m. in the afternoon.

Air traffic was also affected by the storm: 37 flights were canceled at Düsseldorf Airport . At Cologne / Bonn Airport once per hour of operation long.

Northern Germany

In northern Germany, the storm brought heavy snowfall. The resulting slippery roads resulted in many traffic accidents. In Penzlin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), a 61-year-old car driver was killed. In Braunlage and Clausthal-Zellerfeld , school lessons were canceled on January 18, but due to the weather in the north, it was canceled on January 19 in several districts of Lower Saxony and in a school in northwest Mecklenburg .

A top gust reached 204 km / h on the Brocken . According to the Lower Saxony State Forests , there was considerable forest damage due to windthrow , especially in southern Lower Saxony , Solling and the Harz Mountains. Poland

In Poland, squalls reached a speed of 100 km / h. 50,000 people were without electricity. The fire brigade went on 700 missions. In western and central Poland, the wind brought two buses off the lane, injuring two people.

Austria

In Austria only the foothills of the storm Friederike were noticeable. Strong winds on the mountains shifted to the plains and reached Vienna from the west . Heavy snowfalls were the result in the Alpine region. The western line between Zams in Tyrol and Bludenz in Vorarlberg had to be closed due to the risk of avalanches.

The stop of long-distance traffic in Germany also had an impact on Austria. The corridor traffic between Salzburg and Kufstein on the western railway line was not affected, as were the trains to Munich, but for those traveling by train to Nuremberg the terminus was already in Passau .

Switzerland

The storm also caused traffic problems in Switzerland. On January 18, numerous mountain railways and train connections had to stop operating due to the strong winds. The Jungfrau Railway in the Bernese Oberland , the Pilatus Railway in the canton of Lucerne and the Visp - Täsch and Aigle - Les Diablerets connections in the canton of Valais were affected .
